playing against the AI was a terrible experience, the fog of war is designed to hide the AI right before you get the kill shot, the AI spams aerial bombing on your tanks with no cool down time, AI kills your machine gunners quickly but you can't kill there's no were near as fast. AI can pin eight units quickly with just one machine gunner but your machine gunner can't do this. Basically the AI cheats in every mechanic.

Developers learn to program AI to be smarter not make it cheat to make it competitive.

Very frustrating, boring and uninstalled.

I know it's a bit of a necro, but I hate this too, and I think both users quoted above are partially right. The thing is, these RTS games are basically designed around giving the AI as much of an advantage as possible. What does this mean? It means large maps with tons of control points to be captured, which means you need to spread out and be aggressive - something the AI does well since it can micromanage all its units at the same time. No chokepoints or turtling allowed. Secondly, the AI can see the entire map as well as your units' vision range, so it will always hide in the fog of war and try to go around you. Again, since all maps are wide open with few defendable positions or chokepoints, it advantages the AI. Furthermore, the AI can also instantly react to your grenades or airstrikes, always know when to retreat and harass you, etc. On top of this, the AI also seems to be able to outproduce you 2 to 1 without having more territories than you (tried it on Normal.)

You're absolutely right. The "limit" of what the programmers can instill into the AI stops at Standard difficulty in the CoH series - and anything beyond that is the computer cheating (maphacks and advantage in micro aside).

I don't think CoH3's AI is any worse than in CoH1 or 2's, and perhaps that's part of the problem? You'd think Relic would have found a way to innovate their scripts in the decade they spent reinventing the RTS wheel. But no, it plays almost exactly like CoH2's AI did. The only thing that makes it harder, like you said, is the wasteland maps they give you. 2v2's feel like they should be 3v3's, and 3v3's are just barely manageable in a 4v4. Mind you, CoH2 had this problem too (looking at you Vaux Farmlands)... It just had more maps to choose from, and more reliable team-weapons that didn't take up 80% of your popcap to put down.

The AI has no bonuses as standard. It only has resource bonuses on higher difficulties. If you want a “fair” challenge as standard, I recommend the Advanced AI mod available in the workshop. The author has done a great job, and his mod offers some nice improvements over the vanilla AI. However, don't expect to play it on Expert difficulty - it's a hair-raising experience.
