I know that mg42s (or any mg) can seem oppressive, but I find that if I do start a game with 2 mg42s, I'll have the upper hand for about 3 minutes before they get rolled with mortars, smoke or vehicles.
That's why.
Put them in a building? Gun is somehow destroyed at 2 men and they retreat off the map. Units will litterally walk straight down the center of your gun, not be pinned, and nade you. Smoke exists. Mortars exist. Most maps allow for easy flanking.
I believe it's the switching animations for the squad inside the building. If the gunner is taken out during a transition then the auto retreat similar to the single man mortar. I find eating grenades or barrages then retreating has kept my mgs from being wiped.
