Sure it's playable but there isn't much to keep you in the game you can easily lose interest in it fast.
If you want something like TOW either try men of war or gates of hell, if you wanna go into simulation strategy then graviteam and combat mission is what you want.
If not for now just wait for coh 3 to go on sale it's not at all worth its full price tag.
The Rommel campaign works but is badly-written and very linear. It's a sort of expanded tutorial for the DAK (as they're the 'new' faction in this game) but with sketchy history, a tacked-on, confused narrative and poor AI.
Serious answer btw: if you're interested in quality CoH campaigns, just pick up CoH1 when it's on sale. It has (by far) the best campaign of all the CoH games, followed by the Brit and Panzer Elite campaigns in the Opposing Fronts expansion. You can pick up CoH + OF for a few bucks when they're on sale. Well worth the purchase regardless.
The Ardennes Assault expansion for CoH2 had a good campaign, but it's absolutely FUBAR nowadays because of various updates for the units that were designed for MP but have ended up breaking SP. Don't buy it.
The main CoH2 campaign is solid, but inferior to the CoH1 campaigns.
Avoid CoH3 until they actually finish the game. I know this is something of a meme nowadays but in this case it's true; the game genuinely does look and feel like an Early Access title, but you're paying full whack for it. It's just not worth it.
Yeah, I think waiting for an actual features roadmap to appear (and seeing whether those features are actually implemented) makes sense. The comparisons between DoW3 and CoH3 are fascinating in that they are *sort of* opposite scenarios; DoW3 was a really polished, beautiful-looking game with working features, relatively few bugs and a sort of middle of the road campaign that worked fine. However, the game design was not what people wanted and so people lost interest quickly and the game died.
With CoH3, the core game design is sound and people generally enjoy the game, but it has a lot of visual and sound issues (the sound mixing in this game is some of the worst I've ever heard), there aren't enough maps (a problem shared with DoW3 btw), there are countless steps back from CoH2 in terms of QoL features, and core MP features like replay mode, observer mode, map vetoes and even a surrender button are missing. It all feels very barebones and rushed. You have to remember that CoH3 was due for release in November but pushed back until February, and it's still in this state. Can you imagine what it must have been like in November?
It'll be interesting to see what things look like at Christmas. I was gifted this game by a friend who received several keys as he was a beta tester (they all got a bunch), but I somehow still have buyer's remorse. I know that doesn't even make sense, but that's how disappointed I feel as someone who's been playing and modding these games since 2007ish.
Seriously one feature that Relic advertising is not on Single Player Campaign mode. Lack of attention of detail, picking weapons will not give unit a factional language. Like US rifleman picking up German weapons team that converts that rifleman in MG team but that MG team will sound like German and even German model of the unit.
They are also pretty easy too. There always seem to be a limited number of ai units at the start of the mission. It does not seem build any more or put any pressure on your base. I cannot see me replaying either again. Neither had a map that made me think, "wow... that was tough"
