Case in point, I've played newer releases since CoH3 and my tiny channel still gets most of its views from CoH content. That shows a dedicated community of people out there that'll keep the series alive.
The issue is kind of clear: if Relic plugs off servers, it will be a feat to replace all-unique system in these titles. An impossible one in DoW3 and CoH3 since they use Denuvo. And I'm not too sure if CoH2 community has enough resourses to shoulder hackjob for CoH2 either. But CoH1 modding scene should be able to handle a back-end replacement (maybe, even on Valve's Sockets or other open-sourse solutions). Which would probably transfer to DoW2 as well (despite not deserving it, at all).
Again, I doubt Sega will go for such extent. They will just shorten Re-link's infrastructure if ♥♥♥♥'ll hit the fan (to begin with, they would have to remove "Multiplayer" tag from all the titles across Steam otherwise which means sa-a-a-ales). That's if ♥♥♥♥ hits, of course. Because nothing stops Relic from making their next title successfull one.
Shame for coh fans;
Shame for coh pc community;
Bunch of noobs which relic has become.
Feel the pain.
You also have to bear in mind that COH2 was not popular either when it first launched.
If Relic can go the distance this game will hopefully like coh2 become a refined game with more expansions and a good following.
Additionally when it does go on sale might be the time that those who did not want to pay the massive launch price come onboard.
I personally think that COH3 might be the best coh game yet if the kinks are worked out. It's got a lot of mechanics I really like. Tank riders, MGs that have staged suppression rather than being deal breakers for any assault, breach mechanics, longer ranges and better zoom out than coh2, I don't mind that we now have soldier skins for the first time, I like that the time to kill squads in cover is fairly long and MGs do not suppress squads in cover easily. Machine guns are still very effective, just not dominating the entire game and letting units move around more easily than before.
I don't like the new sounds however as they seem much more generic now that they have bassified them all.
The only problem really is refining the game and fixing all the really basic stuff that was inexplicably left broken or unfinished like unit or skill icons being duplicates which is confusing. Incorrect unit icons for some things like when you build a tank and instead of that tanks icon you get a generic icon of another tank model that is probably supposed to be the symbol for all medium tanks... the retreat button for tanks and infantry is the same by default but does not allow all of them to retreat if they are grouped, things like that. Things that the previous COH dev teams probably could have shared their experience and lessons learned from previous titles if their are any on the coh3 team?
So far though the last patch was really underwhelming, 1 new map and a few text file changes. The next big patch will contain a lot more noticeable content I suspect.
In the mean time coh3 is still a good fun solid game in it's current state imho.
