But I'd say if COH 3 is Battlefield, Ostfront is ArmA.
CoH has a more cartoony look while GoH trys to be more realistic. I personally find both to be graphically appealing. Animations can sometimes be weird in GoH, but the same can be said about CoH, but CoH probably has the edge for animations. Generally you wont even pay a whole lot of attention to the animations in either (Multiplayer at least)
Really, I would get both if you enjoy RTS games. But as a budget conscious person I would say that $60 is way to much for CoH considering the amount of content (maps especially).
There's a sound overhaul on the way, so that side of it is about to all change. There's already more meaty FX in the game than you'll find here, but then you also have larger calibre artillery to use.
Graphics are grittier, much more realistic, neither game is ugly though. Ost can chug a bit if you dial up Pop cap settings, starts becoming heavily Cpu bound.
I prefer Ost, overall. It's much harder to break defensive lines, the pace is slower, there's a much greater variety in units. It's not as polished as CoH tho, with some annoying problems with vehicles getting stuck in buildings/trenches, and some other jank you'll get from a smaller development team.
Singleplayer = Gates of Hell: Ostfront
Thanks a lot! That's clear enough for me
And yeah, seemingly more micro involved in Ostfront, since blobbing is so effective right now.. Haha.
Gates of hell is more focused on individual model control and inventory management. WHen played on easy / medium, you can play pretty casually. so its pretty approachable.
I would give it a try if you are interested. It has its place in the RTS world. Just be aware, some missions literally give you an hour of prep defense time and even that isn't enough time some missions haha..
GoH is getting an AI rework soon, so don't take this to heart.
Who the hell is playing that crap
