As it's told via the British, I believe British are both white and European... :s
Anyway, it is weird. I was hoping for something like at at the start of the movie Valkyrie, where some German troops would begin to question if they were better off without a fascist party/government. And the actions of the conflict stirring debate among the ranks.
And these are actual journals and letters from Libyans affected by the war.
Plus historically Rommel was in full support of the Holocaust as this campaign points out
lol can't say if this is trolling or just abject ignorance
The reason Libya was involved is because it was on the way to Egypt and eventually Jerusalem.
The starting point for the Afrika Korps was French Morocco and French Algiers and move east through Libya and into Egypt.
Libya was Italian after the Italo-Ottoman war of 1911. Ever the opportunists, Italy tried to grab the remains of the Ottoman empire. The following 20 years they spent subjugating Libya with mass executions, chemical weapons, concentration camps and other fun stuff.
Rommel didn't go there as a conqueror for nazi germany. As germany sent about 20-40k troops and material to support the 200000 strong italian Army there, they also sent Rommel to command the joint force. He did not go there to take over civilian leadership of the territories. Even as military commander, that duty - and martial law - was still Italian.
The DAK landed in Italian Libya, not in Frech Marocco. French Marocco was where the Allies landed in Operation Torch. I think you're a bit confused.
Agreed, I would like a shift in perspectives. It's always the same thing, over and over again. It's really tiring seeing an entire group of people lambasted as evil when they were no different than you or I. Normal humans called up to serve, many drafted without an option to say no. I think it's a real childish mentality and easy form of hate to gather upon. Many American Generals even admired Rommel's military prowess and tactics.
There are other games out there who let you play WW2 from the German side and they all do one thing: they focus on the military aspect. In military games. And that is totally fine. Even if you wanted to include a critical commentary, why didn't you include some imaginary German officer (like those in the US stories) and have him reflect about his Jewish friends home or anything similiar.
Instead you decided to give us cutscenes that have nothing to do with the game. Absolutely nothing. Even worse: those cutscenes tell you everytime to lose because you are the bad guy. And this is followed up by Rommel sounding like an US-Yankee and I'm not even mentioning the the German soldier audio lines.
I'm really disappointed by the story. It's such a mess. I'm keeping my posiitive review but only for the MP.
Personally I wish the Germans spoke German, Italians spoke Italian (with native subtitles where possible), and the British and Americans spoke English.
Still want those spaghetti cooked in a british helmet.
