For The King II
Why are there mixed reviews?
I am disappointed by the reviews for this game. I was hoping to see positive reviews especially after the glowing reviews of FtK1.
I was hoping to pick this game up - can someone please explain what is going on?
Thank you

Plenty of people that haven't played FTK1 and expected this to be the next Baldurs gate.

Also plenty of people that look at their favorite old RPG and think "THIS WILL BE EXACTLY LIKE THAT."

It isn't, its a improvement of an already fantastic FtK1.

Actually I would say, your last sentence there is the biggest problem here. It is not entirely a improved game to FTK1. It is more like kinda the same but still different, with problems. There is plenty of stuff they made in FTK1 better but didn't implement in this, out of whatever reasons.

Just to name some:
- The Ping on maps are now only flags, while you had a real ping on the map in the first part
- Ailments on enemies or resistances are badly made or visible compared to the first part
(Sometimes I get enemies displayed on the right side of my screen and am able to see what their immunities actually are and what the symbols do, unless those are up, I have no possibility to check what is actually going on, on them.)

- The complete overview of everything was better in the first part overall.
-- you could hover over the timeline on top screen and see what the affliction is which comes closer with each round, also you could say it is chaos cause it said it is chaos and not something completely random. How a newbie is supposed to know what - chaos will mean if nothing tells him what it is? I was also not sure...
-- You were able to see the XP bar and how much was missing in numeric values even in dungeons which you now not be able anymore (map no problem, dungeons its not visible)
-- In Multiplayer the UI's of different players can sometimes lead to inability to check your own inventory or to stay in town.
-- QoL - We were able to close town and characters screen etc with esc, which now will lead to the menu directly
-- Gold sharing is now more confusing as it was in the first part
-- we were able to get a overview of new character abilities by pressing shift while hovering over them in the shop, if I remember correctly, now I am unable to, as much as we are unable to search for the meaning of passives and what they do, except of the encyclopedia maybe

- the map itself is more confusing, as much as the quests. At least in my eyes, I loved the first part, played all areas in each difficulty. But I literally felt rushed in the first attempts of the game to get somewhere.
- the Quests itself or better the game and the mechanics have completely changed.
-- The game feels extremely more punishable as the first, especially in the first few rounds
-- Fights are supposed to take longer in FTK2, the reason why your literal first quest could be a Skeleton Giant, which has 62 life and 20 Splash AoE damage attacks lmao
-- corpses in the first part randomly found in the first part only had stories to tell or loot, now it can spawn a +3 level higher enemy which has the first attack and can double attack you, good luck with a scholar to get out of there alive...
-- we are unable to stunlock enemies in this part, we could hinder enemies completely from attacking at all in the last part, but enemies can still hinder you or stun lock your characters. As much as there is no counter for evasive enemies anymore except having full focus and having 90+ attributes for the speciality, which is desireable, but not always the best way to handle fights

- the disconnection problems the first game had between epic/steam are now for all players available
- the UI in fights and on maps doesn't update often. Means you don't see that someone has a new gear part on, you cannot see the poison afflicting you, how many focus points you already used or if you actually used a party heal or if it was only a animation with no effect. Sometimes all characters in the map are just invisible

There are def more, but I am to lazy to evaluate what else is not right about the second part compared to the first one and why it might feel like not a improvement to the first part at all.

Nope. This game is overall a step back.
There are a couple of reasons.
1. The launch problems. If you are excited for a release and get your friends together to play a round on the evening of release and instead of having fun playing a nice game it's a frustrated try-and-error to get the problems fixed because there are a lot of bugs and problems that wouldn't allow multiplayer-lobbies to work or not being able to join or getting a freeze or a black screen, etc. Most of them might be fixed now, but that doesn't change the fact that they released a multiplayer game that was not playable in multiplayer at release. (it wasn't the only bugs and there are still bugs left to fix, so the 'trend' of games being released without really being finished was a present in this case as well)

2. The UI is worse than in the first game. It's less readable(for lack of a better word), it feels clunky and getting information about effects, abilities is more complicated than it needs to be.

3. The camera perspective just doesn't feel as good as the first one(I don't know how to describe it in better words).

4. And at least for me and I read about it at a few other places, there are a lot of loading screen and loading 'moments' in game that always take longer than expected and the longer I play, the more annoyed I get, because it just breaks the game flow and the game should not be that intense. (I never felt that way in the first one)

And I think there are a couple of other smaller things, but if there are enough small things, it also gets annoying.

It's not a bad game and I do enjoy playing it, but it doesn't really feel better than the first one and in some aspects it feels worse.
It is pretty much ftk1 but the campaign takes place over multiple chapters which requires you to start new characters for each chapter. Also its graphically improved and the UI is a bit different but tbh its not as bad as people keep saying it is.
Multiplayer dead ass worked on release, all the issues people were having were user error from my experience playing co-op. the game is great people are just spoiled idiots that then refunded the game because they have no attention span.
I've played FTK 1, FTK 2 crashed alot for me, lost many time my saved game, so I had to restart everytime and also lost everything I've unlocked ... Weapons, Classes and etc ..

no way you are losing weapons and classes, that is not how for the king 2 works man, when I crash it just puts me back to the beginning of my turn, are you using cloud storage?
I feel most of the complaints are valid but extremely overblown. I think the game is clearly better. The new grid combat is a big improvement and lore having more use and a clearer use.
1. The UI is better but room to improve still.
2. The camera can be annoying and I hope will be worked on for a future update.
3. The balance seems intense and I think the game should be balanced for any sized group.
4. Yup, there are bugs and similar issues ftk1 had like UI triggers leaving a large box with a picture of an item on the screen which should have been fixed.

I don't like the UI at all. FTK1 has a much clearer, and more enjoyable UI in my opinion. This feels like an Excel table with text is pasted in my bottom right corner.

I bought the game immediately with a friend of mine, but I am not being a beta-tester. I may try it again when they fix their bugs, especially the online-related ones and the reviews show a more positive trend.

I loved the first game so much that I haven't left a review, but if I had to right now, it would be negative.

The game is too buggy. Disconnects, not being able to move unless you go into menu, had 2 wolves spawn on the same square.

The battle system isn't very user friendly. I was afraid to even click on a square because I'd accidentally attack, but you need to know where the AoE will be. Should just be able to select a square and press the attack you want to do.

The game is also built around using one controller, even online. Your camera is constantly pulled and menus are closed. When you open your inventory it shows the current players inventory. Hard to even see your own stats when it's not your turn compared to the first game.

Also both games needed some indication that it is your turn. So many times we have to remind a player that it's their turn.

I have played both and i think this is better. (should be saying that)
Reading the negative reviews also got me a bit confused. ALL of them seem fairly oke-simply QoL fixes, nothing destructive that should warrant a 40-50% rating.

But, I hope once the game gets fixed most people change their review
vermintide 2 had mixed (or maybe even negative, I dont remember) reviews when it came out, look at it now. It'll be the same thing.

It sounds like you have a broken controller on the first part, or driver issues.
You know where my "broken controller" works just fine? In For The King 1.
Hey gang, just wanted to drop in here and say that we are actively listening to reviews and we appreciate the feedback you've all given us.
We issued a handful of hotfixes over the weekend, the latest of which addressed some of the issues players brought to our attention. Included in that were balance adjustments for chaos and apprentice mode, UI additions for tooltips, and multiplayer stability.

We understand that running into bugs and issues can negatively impact your experience, so we also understand that the reviews are going to reflect that.
We hope if one of the hotfixes we've already pushed hasn't answered your feedback, that you'll stick around and continue to work with us on the future of FTK2.

Here's the latest hotfix: https://steamcommunity.com/games/1676840/announcements/detail/3774639576527533435?snr=2_9_100003_
