To those playing this
I've heard 'things' about some of the themes covered by the narrative...
So is this game peddling any kind of propaganda?
Even if there is a certain amount of messaging, is it presented in a subtle way?
I don't need games and movies to preach at me and while the game looks intriguing, it does come off as a tad pretentious...

If you feel threatened or worried about that kinda thing, you should probably play less narrative-driven games. Try something else.

I'm liberal and the only part I could see someone who is conservative getting upset at (i.e. b/c it is the most blatant) is the covid-like elements (not a theme but the setting) and maybe a handful of minor references to racial stuff (e.g. kids at school making fun of Asian kids' food). The latter is a major theme of the story, but it's more about the immigrant experience.

This is def. one of those things that is pretty nuanced. I know some people who really like things like Andor and the Expanse though technically those stories are not politically aligned with them. They are well written and expansive which I think people appreciate and they tend to interpret it their own way. If you are someone who likes those stories (Andor and the Expanse), then I think you'll probably like it. Alternatively if you like Neon Genesis Evangelion, you'll likely like it.

Thematically--I'll write this as spoiler free as possible--the game is about the parallels between rebellion and generational conflict to rebellion and societal conflict. You can decide if you think that is too "political."

That being said, if you are not a fan existential stories/sci-fi (2001: A Space Odyssey, Neon Genesis Evangelion) that often become sort of surreal at the end, then this may not be for you. (Your mention of "pretension" made me mention this.)

What a small-brained take from OP...

Nothing but respect to you for actually answering the question instead spewing buzz words at OP like the other smooth brains. Good on you man.

Not wanting to be subjected to propaganda isn't that at all. You don't like being subjected to things you dont like and its not a "small brain" take then.

without spoiling too much, the game's political messaging is, in my opinion decidedly unsubtle. for me, this is to the game's benefit, because it's much more concerned with the ways in which these political issues and themes affect the characters, and how they respond to the world they've been placed in. ultimately the game asks for you to decide for yourself what you think about how they responded, and how you would respond to those same circumstances.

i think over the course of a playthrough it should be pretty clear what the authors' standpoint is, but i think they moreso are asking that you try to understand rather than commit to adopting a specific political platform.

most reddit thing i've seen on here in a while :steamhappy: this simple-minded perception of "propaganda" is what makes you vulnerable to political messaging in the first place
