So for those seeking mp games, discord is the way to go.
The only multiplayer iv ever seen was from youtube, and those youtubers dont play the game anymore.
The food management to not starve is not a fun gameplay mechanic.
Normally a strategy game is about progressing into a threat for the enemy, but TFC is more a silly concept that limits the food system so that starvation is more a threat than any other enemy.
I have won games against AI because the AI starved.. that the word "pathetic" comes to mind when i see the TFC icon on my desktop.
The simple graphics charm cannot save it.
At some point you become limited by the 200pop since your villagers are so efficient as each civilization gives you a huge buff late game once you get all the technologies (like in horde mode).
As for AI, the devs have worked very hard to make them a challenge, but as you saw it can be a bit tricky with the starvation mechanic and the AI still needs improvement. I recommend going 1v2 or 1v3 master for a real challenge (if they don't starve), or coop master horde (which is quite harder than solo horde IMO).
But most of the game's fun will be found in the multiplayer, I especially enjoy FFAs as they can get quite chaotic.
But as you said, some will find this game very unattractive due to its mechanics, but hopefully some won't and we eventually get a big enough community to play without having to schedule through discord, finding open lobbies directly, fingers crossed!
player population ^^
Something tells me you will need to do more than cross your fingers to get the community you think you need to bypass "Starve -the Game".
The starvation bugs will be addressed shortly in 1.1.
