Does enabling cheats or lowering difficulty disable achievements?
...Because they should.

Anything that makes the game easier than it's normal intended difficulty should turn off all achievements. I'll be waiting to see if that's the case before paying money to support the game.

Here's hoping. Looks like a decent play and I'd love to support, but cannot do so in good conscience if the game gives welfare achievements; too much of the game industry is caught up in catering to the lowest common denominator to the detriment of the games themselves and enjoyment of them by people who, you know, read books.

So, anyone know if all those cheats and easy modes listed as "pros" for some reason turn off achievements, or is this a pass on paying? ;)

I already answered this question. Achievements tied to Normal and higher difficulties can't be done with Assist Mode. That means those Achievements can't be unlocked using Assist Mode or 'Cheats'. That includes an Achievement that is 100% the game on Nightmare difficulty, which to my knowledge only one person has unlocked so far.

If you wanna prove to everyone you beat the game without using Assist-Mode, those are the Achievements that do it. For the rest of people let them enjoy unlocking Achievements too using the in-game features that exist to make the game fun for them.

Ok, well, sorry to ask for clarification but it wasn't as clear as you perhaps thought it was.

The game really does look like a labour of love and I respect that. Followed your progrss in the Metroidvania FB group. This is something I should've brought up on your posts, perhaps - and maybe it doesn't seem important to you but there are a huge number of gamers like me who started gaming in the early 80s and who are very, very, VERY tired of the easymode trend in gaming.

I fully believe that there should be modes to allow people of lesser skill (and in most cases, attention span and patience), to play and enjoy most games. I even think it's ok for those people to be able to attain "achievements" that accurately reflect their actual achievement.

But if I'm playing on the hardest mode possible, my achievement shouldn't be the same as someone using a cheat, no matter what achievement it is. At the least it should have different versions of the achievement depending on difficulty level and whether or not cheats are used and have that be clearly marked.

So I guess I'm wondering out of the achievements available, how many are hand-outs? (a.k.a. doable using cheats)?

The achievements tied to difficulty modes like beating the game on Normal, Nightmare and 100% Nightmare can't be gotten with assist mode.

The rest like 'Aquire X Item' or 'Find 75 Mindshrooms' or 'Talk to this statue' can be gotten with Assist Mode.

So if you want proof that you beat the game without assist mode there are achievements that do so.

Did that answer your question?

Most of the achievements don't get turned off by using the Assist Mode. Using the ingame command prompt (that's hidden) turns off all Achievements.

And then there are some Achievements that are entirely tied to the higher difficulties, there is no way to get those unless playing the game without Assist-Mode.

Ok.

But does turning on the many cheats - and they ARE cheats, not "help" so let's call them what they are - turn off achievements?

Here's a list of things that should turn achievements RIGHT OFF, period:

Assist Mode Everything:
Platforming Pause
Magic Platforms
Worldmap Hints
Stronger Sword
Infinite MP
and of course Invincibility should turn off absolutely everything.

If they don't, what achievement exactly is there, other than being good at having your hand held, and holding it out for free participation trophies - which is not at all the purpose, spirit or even literal meaning of "achievement"?

I understand having these be in the game as OPTIONS for people who want the game to be easy or who lack video gaming skill - but that should be enough.

They'll get to play the game same as everyone else, they just shouldn't get the achievements associated if they cheat. Which again, is what this is no matter how you describe it in positive terms.

So, exactly what achievements get turned off, and by what? I'm looking for details here, because it's important, and I want to make a post about the game in groups I'm in and the one MASSIVE Metroidvania group that I run.

The gaming industry has handed out enough digital welfare. Achievements and trophies are where it has to stop, because it has to stop somewhere and it's too late for integrity of games themselves.

If they did the thing, they did the thing. They should get the achievement "I did the thing". If they had / needed help to do the thing? They still did the thing.

There can always be separate achievements for "I did a hard thing", but even then, "your achievement should be invalidated because you needed or asked for help" is an attitude that has zero place in video games we play for recreation, especially in the context of options for allowing more people to access and enjoy the game to begin with. (Digital welfare? Integrity of games? If my eyes could roll any harder I'd be chasing them down the street right now.)

I understand you, the existance of achievements is kinda self-defeating when their feat is relative to begin with.
But videogames are taken way too serious nowadays people believe it would be "excluding" saying someone they shouldn't get the virtual plastic trophy, just because they used some "help". That the existance of such extremely large, game trivializing "helps" from begin with, are the reason WHY they should be deactivated, that's not what most people seem to grasp.

Some things are only valuable because they aren't relative, because there is something exclusive to them. It's not about excluding the people who don't get it, but to preserve the allure an exclusive challenge can provide - for everyone, that's what draws us to tackling these challenges onward from begin with.
There is nothing wrong with that principle.

Thank you. I think more than anyone, gamers like myself who started playing in the 80s and then who went through the death of MMOs thanks to Blizzard's welfare and removal of uniqueness; complete homogenization that destroyed attachment to my character, feels this way about gaming in general. Sick of the catering to people who don't like to read, don't want to bother to get good at a game because they have no attention span and zero patience thanks to our "culture", and who don't therefore appreciate anything. I deal with those people IRL, I do not want to deal with them in online games and I don't want my achievements tied to or compared to what they do.

I don't care what anyone thinks of this; it's not a rare opinion and I'm in good company as well. But even FromSoftware dropped a game for casuals with farming exploits that meant any moron could "beat" a "Dark Souls" game. To me, that indicates we're sliding down the slippery slope at top speed. So I'm a jerk about it. No apologies.

Why, and no. :)
And if they did I'd just make a new thread.
And if this account were blocked I'd just go to another.

No one tells me to shut up. <3 Not effectively anyway.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Yup. Thanks. Sorry for wasting your time. Grand majority of achievements are hand-outs. Thats disappointing but, there are plenty of games out there for people like me and I'm sure you'll do well. Not for me or my group, but good luck with it.

Yeah no worries, go enjoy the other great Metroidvanias out there :)

Just curious, I've been in the Metroidvania FB for years now. Which one is yours the 16k one or the smaller one and what is your name in it?

I run one (smaller but still very large, and the one I meant when I said not for my group) and am an admin in the largest genre group on Facebook. I've seen and liked your posts there. Followers the development with everyone else.

Not comfortable saying more and not sure why you'd want that other information.

I don't know anyone who is going to put their real name on Steam, lol

I do wish I had said something from the beginning on this topic but some of the other admins are exactly the kind of lazy ass I'm describing and would get triggered if I had.

Anyway, good luck with your game. If you make a sequel please consider what I've said.

Take care
