The game loads the last tanks used in the last custom battle so if one or more of them gets corrupted for some reason, it crashes.
However, deleting the entire directory is nonsense, better cut/paste each faction folder one by one and run a game to see which one is messing up.
Once the faction is identified, we do the same with the faction's tanks.
I tried this. It didn't work. I also removed the steam file in the folder and turn off cloud saves. That still didn't help. When I click the Custom Battles button I get a flash of the menu on the right side of my screen. Even with all the factions removed. I can see just default tanks in the "flash" of the menu.
This bug started for me after a battle on Fields involving 36 tanks (12 on one side vs. 24 on the other) in which I tried exiting the battle after a defeat and the game hung up on the loading screen. After I shut down and loaded it back up is when the problem started.
I found another fix. you have to go here C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\LocalLow\HD\Sprocket\CustomBattleSetup.json and delete the CustomBattleSetup.json. Deleting that file resets the custom battle setup you used the last time. I also heard that some people have that file missing.
Thank you so much bro. It fixed it for me.
