for now you should also free yourself from that kind of discouragement. i naturally put lotta fuel in my designs yet that does not prevent me from clearing scenarios. even hard limits like insane ai aim, unfavorable map design and questionable physics have not prevented lotsa players from making speed demon designs.
Its fair to say that its a bit hard to see a "overall reliabilty" of community tanks because of that.
I usually (building 10-20t) have fuel down to 500l but with external tanks and tend to put about 8mm-15mm on the non-important sides for immersion sake. So it isn't much of a problem in personal play. Same for the "ERA" which i don't mind if constructed in a way it fits in the design.
Again: The problem is really to see if other people builds are actually superior to yours if corrected for immersive values.
Having a copy&paste spreadsheet of your tanks characteristics would be great to solve it in part, as you can just dump them under your design, without the pain of hunting down each value for your own design.
