The story in gb4 was indeed a steaming ploper of poopie.
I know there is the "Have you played the previous Gundam Breakers games?"
Nope haven't played em. From what I am reading it wasn't all that great either.
I think the issue it has IMO is that Gundam Breakers takes a great deal of it's inspiration from the Gundam Build Fighters series.
When you boot up the game it gives that narrative / Synopsis identical to Build fighters.
"The near future. Years after the huge "Gunpla"-plastic models based on the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam-boom of the 1980s. A second Gunpla boom is taking the world by storm, fueled by the revolutionary new ability to pilot your own Gunpla creations in "Gunpla Battles". These incredibly-popular Battles culminate in a yearly global tournament. "
Which is fine, I suppose. It's playing too safe if you ask me "Story wise" it tones down the "Violence aspect" "War Aspect" "Destruction" "Factions" Basically devoids the seriousness that the Gundam franchise is notoriously known for.
Instead of giving people giant mechs to pilot and witness bloodshed, as well as countless battles, military tactics and more. insane numbers of deaths. Some by the 40 million+ in just the UC timeline alone.
We get model kits that fight in hologram like sandbox, video game inside a video game.
I don't recall if any of the characters in GB4 says the usual "Damn, Hell, Bast^rd, Crap" Which is common.
Very cliche plot twists, and odd dialog. Granted it's normal from the gundam franchise in general. But it's super cliche in GB4 like it's some sort of Korean / Japanese soap opera / drama.
There is 40 years of source material from the gundam franchise which mind you barely got used. While there is some sprinkled in. Most of it came from [G Gundam] mainly towards the 3/4ths of the way into the story up to the end.
Which is among my top 3 favorite series.
My main gripe is that there isn't really a risk factor involved when it came to the story. Sure [Chaos and the four kings commit digital crimes and hacking blah blah blah] While that sure counts as a risk factor it's very mild compared to things that happened in manga / anime series.
It felt like gb4 is a game where you play as digital mechs hitting other digital mechs with waterguns and pool noodles when comparing to the real deal seen in manga / Anime.
Narrative plays way too safe. It comes of as SJW's but Gunpla. Defending AI, some kid Tao get's bullied and defeated to then defeat the bully in a video game.
How am I supposed to defend AI when the NPC Tao is running in place at the edge of the map. Or how I have the game set to newtype and they always die? I mean that's normal I suppose. But you get what I mean lol.
Also Lin and her (Guardian) Misa and the drama of that ontop of Meister Jin, It was very cliche.
Yea they mainly were. Though the issue me and other friends had with this one wasn't so much of the tropes/cliche stuff like with previous games, but it just ends way too quickly and feels like stuff was just cut at the end.
Like it starts to get into the "serious" parts near the last few missions and then WHOOPS THAT'S IT, STORY'S OVER.
It's entertaining for me and the guys talking (the characters), but for anyone watching it's painfully boring/tiresome.
So far, I'm not warming up et all. You know what would make me care about Tao? If the MC met him in real life, in an arcade and we get the illusion that him and Tao vibed together.
You know what would make me care about Tao being the bullied kid? If the MC came across him being picked on by that Serito and his gang before having to take a hit defending him.
Although this approach prevents Lilin from becoming a "real" in-universe human, you can just insert her as the odd online friend that somehow got involved with the in-universe gang.
The biggest problem with GB4's story isn't how it's written as generic as it is, it's how it's delivered. The MC in GB3 helping Misa's family arcade via getting into serious gunpla battles is more compelling of a narrative than the GB4's MC meeting with the gang and doing online shenanigans together.
My feeling in why the story's delivered this way is due to Bamco wanting to shill out their Gundam Metaverse thing they've been working on, but that's just my feeling.
This is the quality you'd expect for a half-assed reboot/1st in a trilogy sort of deal.
New engine, new game, new characters, etc.
Hopefully we get a better Breaker game in 3-4 years.
Even build divers which this rips off of had the characters meet irl at least once or twice.
I have a lot of gripes with the game, but the only thing that came out of it is "buy Breakers 3" and that's it. If 5 becomes a thing in the future, hopefully it doesn't repeat the same narrative misteps the 4th had and the stages are more open-ended ala 3.
Is this using unreal 5 ? NGB used unreal 4. Not sure it will be 3-4 years if we get a sequel, I'd expect it be a shorter time span. Gundam Breaker 1 released in 2013. GB2 released a year later. GB 3 released 2016. NGB two years after. Between GB3 and NGB Bandai made the descision that all it's devs needed to switch to Unreal so as to make it easier to port to PC. If Bandai decides to give this a sequel I'd say 2, 3 years tops. I'm not sure what will change if the devs keep the same mission design philosophy they have now of small arena and wave for every mission. The other thing is story wise they need something else other than discount build divers. They just don't seem like they can take the concept as far as Divers did with a whole game world it had.
Honestly, it's tempting to send mail to the directors/Bandai asking that if a sequel's made, they avoid doing the Build Divers thing and just go back to Breaker's 3 style of story.
But with them trying to make the Gundam Metaverse thing work, I don't think we'll get anything like that for a while.
I would not mind a Divers type story, but they just made something that should work much better as a video game lame. They combined Divers S1 and S2 plot lines and tried to speed run it, GBN offered way more game modes then GB4.
Why is the company not simply pulling the internet cable, fix the servers offline and then put the whole thing back online without all these backdoor vulnerabilities. Also send the cops to this chaos guys house since he outed himselfe as a former developer. Problem solved.
Instead they give a 7 day deadline that if the PLAYERS dont somehow fix the issue somehow, everything gets friggin deleted (wich by that point i imagine is a multi million dollar project that makes concords failure look like peanuts)... new sentient AI included.. you know.. the discovery of the century with untold possibilities? Oh and the PLAYERS have to go up against the guy who basically has admin powers. AKA he could just delete their profiles or ban them at any moment of his choosing. Wich he doesnt do ofcourse because plot twist! He actually loves the game.... and it is all treated as if there are actual stakes involved for everyone even thought Chaos could just go "Nope.. this never happened" and reset everyones accounts even after his "defeat"
The whole story feels like a very bad and rushed anime adaptation, complete with "all secondary cast character get exactly ONE episode for personal growth and then they dont actually do anything for the rest of the season" tropes
Ah well... still a better lovestory then new gundam breaker XD
That or GB4 really is a rushed product after porting all of their assets from the old GB engine.
