Just buy it, play, and decide if you want to refund it or not. You have a couple of hours covered by Steam's refund system.
And if you really need some sort of social validation to influence your decision, there are already various reviews of the game in both written and video formats with comments from players.
The main loop of the game is to play stages and beat robots and bosses in order to cause them to break and drop the parts ( hence the name) which you can then equip yourself and customise, which sounds very simple but it is very addicting.
That is because every time you seem to think you have finally achieved the build of your dreams, a new item customisation option is unlocked, or a whole new series of items begins dropping, or you find new parts with new abilities you want to try and have fun with.
DO YOU NEED PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF GUNDAM:
Of course, if you are into Gundam, there is the added appeal of being able to build and customize your very own Gundam, with the design, weapons and abilities that you have always dreamed of, but that the shows will never showcase.
However, a new player with no knowledge will have the added bonus that due to not knowing what gundams and parts do what, and with no measure of expectation on what to find, the customization, building and discovery will be much higher and much more fun.
IS THERE ENOUGH TO DO:
The main story is about 20 hours, probably more in your case since you have not played this kind of game before, but there is also a ton of extra content and also the online multiplayer to get better and more parts and continue building your gunpla.
Be warned that the single player story campaign is EXTREMELY ANIME, think something like Beyblade or Yugioh or Medabots, the kind of story where everything in the world revolves around the hobby to the point of being a bit silly, but it´s serviceable enough.
WHAT MAKES THIS SERIES BELOVED:
Well, as i said before, imagine watching Gundam shows and series for 30 years and then suddenly being told that not only you can be the protagonist of the next story, but that you can create your very own gundams out of all your favorites parts, systems, technology and weapons.
Plus it´s just fun mindless arcade fun with an addictive gameplay loop that is simple but works.
A) Yes there's plenty to do in singleplayer from story mode, quest missions, bounty hunter (which is a 3 vs 3 with player units controlled by AI) and the new survival mode. All can be played offline by yourself with AI teammates and online with players.
B) Absolutely not at all. Gundam knowledge here would only serve as a familiarity knowing Gundams off by heart and immediately knowing which skills they might have if equipped with their certain body parts.
C) The reason why Gundam Breaker is so loved because of the millions of customisation options and freedom to create your own Gundam whether it's just basic recolouring of say a plain Zaku II, or a serious mix and match build for min-maxing or something ludicrous.
