start of chapter 3, you will unlock the feature where you can upgrade their level. Later chapter, you can increase their rating (star).

they are 1-3 star, they serve to give you everything you need to build that unit and building blocks, I actually buy multiples of the same pack based on what I know from gundam breaker 3.

You can make them as powerful or more powerful than anything you find due to systems you unlock later on. They are there so you don't have to do part grinding for most things. If you want to pilot a specific suit, the boxes are ideal as they basically let you build one from the beginning. From there you can upgrade, improve and modify the abilities/powers of the suit later on to make it truly powerful.

how do you unlock kits? Is there a way, for example, to unlock Zaku II or something? How do i know what parts are safe to sell/discard?

I rather hold them so you can synthesis them for certain performance that is in them. Better yet, derivation synthesis which is like crafting to make a whole new gundam parts that you haven't unlock yet. Unlock kits is just playing through story. I can't figure out another way to unlock them other than story.

hopefully at some point they all unlock. Until i know a certain set is available, i'm going to be paranoid about parts from it. I'm sure there's a parts cap, too, that i'll hit before i'm prepared and i'll be forced to sell parts.
