My one criticism of Undertale is that I feel it doesn't fully explore its battle system. Dodging enemy attacks is a cool gimmick, but it doesn't do anything beyond that, and the patterns are too easy anyway. Every battle just comes down to picking the right dialogue options to end the fight after N turns. And there are really only two challenging fights in the whole game.
Deltarune expands and evolves on combat mechanics perfectly. Party members give you more decisions to make and TP adds in resource management, so now there's some consideration in how to optimize every battle. And grazing, hell yes grazing, such an amazing addition to the formula. Loved the bonus bosses so far, if we're getting one for every chapter I'll be very happy.
Also, hot take incoming, Undertale Bad Time was trying too hard to be edgy but just comes across as dumb and cheesy. But Deltarune Weird Route, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is actually dark as hell for real now.
Well, let's consider the fact that it takes a lot of work and time to make a game, and also to make one as good as this, plus as someone mentioned he has a team now...
Simply put him spending another two years making something of this quality and then publishing for free would be a terrible idea. Even if he makes a lot of money from Undertale, that money won't last forever. if Deltarune was not free, not only would he make more games for a longer period of time, but have more time to make those games (Due to a lack of having a job to support living.)
maybe not
and maybe a sprinkle of disappointment.
