If I was making a game (oh, wait... I am) then I like the idea of there being hidden areas that can only be accessed by going into the game files and running different executables, from the game's folder, than the one specified for running the game normally.
This has an interesting side-effect, because even if someone hacks / mods the game... each of the different programs would need to be hacked separately. ...among other neat things it allows for.
Anyways, as far as Deltarune goes, since the Darkners seems to all be real world object that can fit in your pocket, I think it would be neat if they got extra-meta with it by having there be a video game inside of the video game and one of the secret bosses being a character who wants to leave the handheld game that he is from to be free, but then finds out that he can't or something. That's the best I can come up with in uh... it's been 16 minutes since I found this topic, apparently.
Their form when you fight them is an Ice-E animatronic with a guitar from an old commercial that scared Kris as a kid, and made them believe Ice-E ate kids. Their attacks use "shadow magic" that binds you in place (purple soul form). The lines this time are like the fret board on a guitar and with the Shadow Mantle, it becomes a sort of rhythm minigame for the boss battle.
Another similarity: Jevil mentions Queen when you beat him with violence, and Spamton constantly talks about Mike, including when being beaten violently. I believe the 3rd secret boss knows the Chapter 4 main boss.
The secret boss can't be predicted unless you know Mike's intentions, however, and I doubt he's the secret boss since both the previous ones were revealed in-chapter, and it would be dumb to have Mike be mentioned but never show up for some players, or be like regular Spamton and show up for a quick mini-boss.
Purpose of the toys: Get revenge on Kris for not playing with them for a long time.
Way to win:
1) Play with every toy and spare everyone from this box.
Outcome: Kris will be thanked for game and one of the toys will give him his armour.
2 ) Beat up all the toys.
Outcome: Kris will be thanked for "game" and one of the toys will give him his sword.
The way to find the boss: In some secret room, Kris will find one of these toys. After completing some errand, Kris will be taken to the box.
(Yeah, i used a Google Translator)
Personally, I was thinking of something a bit more primitive & semi-universally accessible.
No reason there can't be a second door to get to the same feature, though.
In any case, whichever way that such a thing could or would be implemented by a dev -
I do like a good meta design.
...and chances are that most of the rest of the people here do too,
considering the (moderate spoilers):
canon relevance of the player as a secondary or tertiary entity to the main characters in this series.
or
that saving & save-scumming are canon in this series.
or
that the games in this series get semi-meta to subvert your expectations in any number of hundreds of other ways as well.
