Essentially, the game will check if you defeated Jevil in another Save file and give the item depending on the approach you used to defeat him (so the tail if Spared, Devilsknife if violence). so the two key factors here are:
1) Defeat Jevil in a save file
2) DON'T have his item and crystal at the start of chapter 2
I'm not sure about the priority of how the game chooses the save file, but it could be as simple as the most recent one.
which means what McMoogle said is wrong, because the save file being used for Ch.2 is irrelevant, and also, if you already have the item & Crystal in your inventory by the time you begin Chapter 2, why would it appear in the pit?
1. Copied my save file right before fighting Jevil, so I had two pre-Jevil saves.
2. Beat him pacifist, save.
3. Copied the pre-Jevil save over that (so I could do it again but not use up the revivemint)
4. Beat him with violence, save (in slot 1 I think).
5. Beat him pacifist again, save (in slot 3 I think).
Result: In saves at the end of the game created from both slots 1 and 2 (one normal route, one snowgrave route), hole gave Jevilsknife for both.
