Crazy how cheap people can be, this luxury item worthy of endless replayability is the same price as 4 bags of chips here in the US, like get a grip and stop minimizing the worth of those who work on games

So now we have to fight two consecutive battles in siege in exchange for shorter sieges? Do i understand this correctly?

- european rearmament wont fund itself.

Hard to compare food with videogames but since you want to play this game... At the price of this DLC I can buy a pound of Alaskan salmon. Luxury food vs "luxury item" as you call it. It's hard to believe this DLC is worth as much as all that salmon. For the same price I can also get almost three months of supply of German creatine. The list goes on.

A dozen of hours (most players won't invest 100 hours into this DLC) playing as a Giant in a turn based game isn't worth this much, imho.

We have to look at the bigger picture when evaluating the price of Age of Wonders 4: Giants DLC at €25. Let's break it down with some economic reasoning:

1. Steam's Cut (30%)

Valve takes 30% of each sale, leaving Triumph/Paradox with €17.50 per copy.

2. Value-Added Tax (VAT)

The EU typically applies 20–25% VAT depending on the country. Assuming 21% (Netherlands rate):

The base price before VAT is €20.66.

Steam's 30% cut is taken from this: €20.66 × 0.7 = €14.46.

This means that after taxes and Steam's share, Triumph/Paradox gets around €14.50 per copy.

3. Development & Business Costs

Labor Costs: Triumph (Dutch) and Paradox (Swedish) operate in high-wage countries. Game developers, artists, and QA testers in Europe command significant salaries. The average European game developer earns around €50,000–€70,000 per year, which translates into high fixed costs.

Game Development Time: If the DLC took 6–12 months with a dedicated team of, say, 15–30 developers, that's a substantial investment in salaries alone.

Marketing & Localization: A global release means paying for translations, advertisements, and promotional materials.

Support & Patching: Post-launch updates and community support also require funding.

4. Market Comparison

AAA Game Prices: Full AAA games cost €60–€80 in 2024. If this DLC adds substantial content, €25 isn't out of line.

Previous Paradox DLCs: Paradox is known for premium-priced expansions (Crusader Kings III, Europa Universalis IV). Their pricing strategy has always targeted engaged players rather than mass-market impulse buyers.

Indie vs. AAA: Compared to indie expansions at €10–€15, this is higher—but for a high-budget, strategy-focused expansion, it's still in line with expectations.

Conclusion

While €25 might feel expensive in a vacuum, considering Steam's cut, VAT, and European labor costs, Triumph and Paradox likely only see about €14–15 per sale. If the DLC adds meaningful content, the price isn't out of line with modern gaming economics.

That said, players will always debate value. If the DLC offers only minor additions, the price might feel steep. But if it significantly expands gameplay, then it's a reasonable price in today’s gaming market.

Thanks for the info. Interesting data. I think the point is most people lamenting the price here just made a comparison with the previous DLCs and their respective contents and prices. Having compared the different expansions, they (we) fail to see how this DLC would be game changing whereas others were not. This DLC brings in a lot of content many don't seem to have asked for and, as such, they're unwilling to pay 25 $/€.

Also, no new culture, no new race and no giant-related race transformation (all things that
some people expecting a giant themed dlc wanted).

15 dollars for a DLC???. Mmmmm...que se fumaron!!! If people dont buy the DLC, the devs must put lower price. For people Who buys at this price bbecause its idiots. You must learn to buy things. Inmorls

Was there actually some improvements made in terms of endgame loading times? It usually takes MINUTES for rounds / AI to finish their turn towards end game. Hoped they did some optimization there actually ...

Ok, I admit I'm a bit disappointed with 25€ price tag. I bought every single DLC until now, and I thought that some of them were already a bit overpriced (EA, ER are/were 20€). So when I count money spent on all DLC plus base game it comes around 100€. That's value of 2 AAA games. But I bought them because I like AoW4 and I want to support the devs and the company to continue good work. Now,I feel that this is not the support but ripoff. I will probably buy this DLC as well, but after some time when you make some deal or discount. With 25€ one can buy whole (older) AAA game and have 100+ hours of playtime invested, or to buy this DLC for a game I already played for 200+ hours...

god i would love it if games had the unique playable race diversity this game has.
The giant kings look great.
but the price for this dlc is a bit much, i only care about the giant kings themselves & i'm not too pressed about the rest of it.

In the immortal words of Geddy Lee from The Great White North album: "Eh, 25 bucks is 25 bucks!" (edited to reflect inflation since 1982).

To the Devs I say Job Well Done! I am loving this expansion. Yes its more expensive, but it will indeed give me more and longer satisfaction that 4 bags of chips or a pound of salmon....which I am currently eating btw! Keep up the great work, and as long as I have disposable income, you have customer!
sexy giantess when?
