Highmen and Archons had titans, which later on were undead. Maybe we will see them next expansion.
Oh, that would've been so cool. But sadly, Shadow = both frost and undeath even though these two are not intertwined. You can make a fire-necromancer empire after all, for example.

I think the devs mentioned that they will add new titan types in the next expansion

The devs confirmed that they will add more giant units in the next expansion(likely based off the Archon Titan and Archon Titan Revenant from previous games), but there will be no new Giant Kings ruler types. What we have is all we get, I’m afraid.

I believe the logic was that titans are not giant kings for lore reasons.
( titans are probably a type of archon)

age of wonder 1 lore -( highmen)
( Titans are thought to have walked upon the earth before any of the other ancient races. Some human myths suggest Titans created humanity and then were punished for doing so. Unlike in mythos, Titans do not war among themselves and are of pure good alignment. These beings stand several times taller than the average human and even tower over giants. Titans are adept at fighting able to strike multiple opponents in a single attack with metal weaponry and armor. By their size alone they make formidable opponents.
Titans avoid contact with other races, having spent aeons alone, they don't mind the solitude. They fight for just causes and know the Highmen to be trustworthy of such.)

(humans are lore wise possible children of the archons unlike every other race)

From a serious balance reason it might be so couldn't use necromancers buffs? ( hasten strengthen)
This was a huge surprise for me as well. Really wanted to do a Game of Thrones culture with the undead giants and frostling wildlings. Theres even a head and torso option that put holes in them, clearly referencing an undead giant. Theres no need for a "new ruler type" all we need is for them to do the same thing they did with dragons, add a tag to the level 8 hero skill choices for creature type. easy, done. im sure modders will do it if its not done already

From the new lore:

Traitor Kings
"The Traitor Kings were Giant Kings of old Myrrida, who broke allegiance to the Titans, ending the ancient agreement between Elder Giants and Archons. Drunk on the glory of their kingdom they rejected a faith centered on the Allfather, proclaiming that the Giant Kings themselves had acted as gods and should therefore be worshiped as such.

Acting as ruthless overlords the Traitor Kings engaged in dark magic, twisting stolen knowledge from the Eternal Council to achieve immortality. Yet, when the war with the Archons and Elder Dragons reached their thrones, they fell one by one, leaving only myths of their corrupt souls still haunting the ruins of Myrrida."

Found that in connection with the Cursed Fields landmark where a traitor king cursed the ground with death magic when they died.

From the dev diary Giant Kings Arrives - The ancient Giant Kings trace their regal line back to the Kingdom of Myrrida from the Age of Giants. Though the current clans are few in number and hold only a fraction of the power of that ancient kingdom, they are still primordial beings, masters of the forge and shapers of worlds.
