Does Desolate and Gloom Terrain Stack?
I've been trying to make a pyromancy faction using volcanic spells for a while now having various levels of success. However I recently noticed the appearance of Gloomy Mountains and thought it would look cool with Desolate. It would also be interesting for opponents to have to traverse terrain that they cannot walk fast in, nor settle combo'd with reduced vision and damage over time in the World Map.

The faction could start with Umbral Disciple's and Desolate Walk Race Trait then have the appearance change disabled and then have Vessels of Chaos or something as a race transformation.

However I've read conflicting information online on whether Gloom actually stacks with certain terrain. So can a terrain have both Desolate and Gloom?

Probably conflicts. Arctic and desolate constantly overrides each other in my current game.

Gloom is just another type of terrain, as far as i understand it.

If you played the last mission for ES DLC Sundren even fights Gloom with Frost. When you clear an infestation, the area overrides Gloom with Arctic. So i guess Desolate would work the same way and override gloom, or vice versa.

Never actually tested, but are there any compatible terrain types in game? Tome terrains i mean.
Just tested. They override each other so this particular terrain combo build isn't possible.

I'll have to rethink my ideas then. Thanks again for the responses. Now to decide between Gloom or Desolate Walk for my Pyric Faction.

I'm quite sure that things like snow, gloom, desolate and such are actually the climate which you can only have one of in a province.

Terrain are objects on the map like forest, mountains and such. Where a province can have just about any combination per province.

someone (copokashue) did some testing with gloom and primal cultures on reddit basically found that-

Gloom overwrites swamp, desert, desolate/ashland, and all arctic surfaces

Gloom almost always applies grassland, and almost always applies forest ( also overwrites mushroom forests)

Terrain turned to gloom cannot be transformed back by primal altars, but using direct spells to transform gloom provinces will remove gloom, not just add another feature TO gloom

The altar of marching gloom will not transform terrain that other spells or structures have already transformed

With this in mind, the two primal devotions that actually benefit from gloom are Raven and Wolf,
Of the two, wolf is probably the better pick because the free knowledge from gloom provinces lets you get away with building more conduits, effectively making the bonus from Raven redundant.

That's useful info.
But doesn't change made by altar of marching gloom revert, once the altar itself is destroyed?

I am 100% sure It does revert when destroyed - but it is pretty slow to revert back
- also petty sure it stay as forest/base type terrain in all cases.
( I know if it was grass/sand/snow before it becomes grass/sand/snow again) (probably also works with swamp/ desolate=ash lands)
