GPU Crashes
When you experience a crash that is preceded by "A Driver Crash has occurred" then a GPU disconnect/device removal has occurred. When this occurs we crash the game to avoid instability that may occur from continuing to run the game. These issues are non-descript and can occur randomly based on combination of Hardware, Software and active processes.

They are typically recognized by DXGI Error codes 0x887A0005 DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED or 0x887A0006 DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG. We have active investigations with both NVidia and AMD to determine whether there's anything they can do or we can do to improve the situation.

There's nothing that can be actively done to resolve these types of crashes, however some mitigations might help alleviate the issues.

- If these issues recently started occurring you can check if a Driver Update occurred. If it's possible, returning to the previous stable version may help.

- You can try to disable DxCore, which changes the way GPU Detection occurs. For this you need to do the following
  • Locate your Config folder (see Bug Reporting)
  • Open Game.cfg or create it if it doesn't exist
  • Add DXCORE_ENABLED=false and save the file
  • Launch the game
  • In your logs you should see "Using DXGI for GPU detection" instead of "Using DXCORE for GPU detection"
- You can adjust settings to reduce usage (see Performance)

Posting the exact error message would go a long way into figuring out why the game is crashing.
Experiencing this for 1 year+

The error message reads: Age of Wonders 4 has shutdown due to an unexpected graphics driver error. (0x887A006)
To me it happens now when I load to main menu-wish I could post a screenshot-
Sometimes it doesn't occur so I can actually play, then when I return to an in progress campaign it prevents load of the menu. Will attempt the recommended fix but all other games run fine.
Apart from seeing if a driver update works, reverting to the default driver in the device manager allowed me to play Frostpunk 2 after that game suggested I update on AMD's website.

Sometimes the newest driver does not in fact work best. But my solution doesn't solve everyone's problem. Perhaps a solution on that forum might solve yours.

I only had graphic crashes when AOW 4 first came out. I didn't have to do anything about it, early patches fixed it.

Weirdly I think the issue is caused by the pop up launcher menu..lol after being salty I ran it from .exe file. Ran perfect and played 3 hr today. Game good launcher bad?

I'm still getting the random crashes as well. I've tried everything, and it still crashes every session.

Windows 11
SSD
RTX 4090
14900k

I've uninstalled all drivers using DDU, re-installed drivers and the game, still crashes. It's the only game I play right now that constantly crashes. I keep sending in the crash reports, so they have them, but absolutely nothing has changed with them over many months.

They first told me it was my CPU, so I RMA'd the CPU with Intel, installed the new CPU in a fully updated BIOS/microcode motherboard, still crashes exactly the same way.

Zero overclocking on the CPU or GPU. As default as could be.

Still waiting for a fix ...

I have the same specs and the same problem. This is only game I have that crashes like this. Sent in multiple reports with nothing fixed.
Read my post below about setting I used to resolve crashes with my Win 11, I9 and NVIDIA 4070 Super system .

So I have an I9 14000KF with 32 MB system RAM, and Nvidia 4070 TI Super 16 MB. Bought AOW 4 during the Steam sale, and it was continuously crashing to WIndows. Tried messing with all the graphics setting in game and nothing worked. So I investigated general Nvidia crashing problems.
Saw one post regarding Nvidia's adjustable V-Sync, but Windows graphics settings claims my wide-screen Alienware monitor doesn't support this so I turned V-Sync off in the AoW 4 graphics settings.
Another suggestion for Nvidia cards was to set your monitor speed to 60 Hz. So I set the monitor speed to 60 Hz in the Nvidia control panel (it had a native setting of 100 Hz).
I do not have the Box "if there is a graphics problem" checked in the graphics setting of the game.
I did not mess with any other settings. Advanced graphics settings in the AOW 4 graphics settings are all high and Anti-aliasing is set at MSA4.
I now have very few crashes, which may or may not be caused by my Anti-virus software (IoBit Malware Fighter).

The only other game I have, and I have many Steam games, that has had crashing problems was POE2. That damn thing not only crashed but it crashed my WIndows too. POE1 is notorious for such things and I didn't want to spend the time figuring it out since it's Beta anyway, and I refunded it.

So my conclusion is that graphics settings are what is causing the crashes. If I had a bad I9, playing with graphics settings would make no difference.

I'm having random gpu driver crashes on radeon 7900xtx with error code 0x887A0005 too. It can be after 5 minutes or 2 hours, you never know when...I've tried all of suggested config changes but nothing works, still get crashes. Except one thing: playing in fullscreen, not borderless. Btw I've noticed, that in my case game crashes on popup messages(whatsapp, telegram, windows notifications, steam overlay notifications). Fullscreen not showing them, and no crashes in this mode yet. AOW 4 is great game, but it's stability much worse than my Skyrim with 8000(c) mods. Unpredictable crashes and desyncs making it non playable in long coop sessions with friends =(
