They do follow your tome build perfectly, just don't level the heroes correctly. They will pick skills entirely at random.
Which, in example, led to my order/nature druid/cleric character, when under the AI's control, building hard into necromancy instead of healing like they were supposed to.
It is irritating enough that I am trying to learn how to make custom classes. So I can just shove a custom class on my ascended leaders that force the AI to pick the correct skills. As there will be no other options. xD
