Did performance get worse?
I used to finish games, now I can't stomach the slowdowns. Forest and sieges were always a pain, but lately it's been unbearable. One forest battle with 18 units (not even 36) and my fps goes down to 10-15. I tried the LOWEST graphics with 50% resolution scaling (the models are barely recognizable mushes of pixels at this point) and it gave me a whopping 5 fps increase compared to the High preset with all the whistles. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!

Add to that the constant hangups after selecting units and you've got a nasty, barely playable package.

Every time a patch comes out I search for performance improvements and they're never there. How come?

specs:
i5-7600
RX 5600 XT 6gb
24 gb ram
Installed on SSD

Well let's be honest here, your system is pretty old at this point, and not very powerfull.

Still, with that said, the game is not super well optimized. In some maps, more so than others, you will see fps drops no matter what. It's mostly the forest maps and others with a lot of individual models (like trees) that cast shadows. Those shadows will kill fps.

Even people with top end specs complained about performance on this very forum.

With that said, I didn't notice the game running worse than it did in the past, for me.

Yeah I know, but it's weird that AoW4 is just one of the few games I have such issues with. This PC runs Cyberpunk at 50-60 fps on medium. Warhammer 3 - 40-60 frames on medium-high. Rogue Trader - 60 fps on medium-high.

My specs are way above the minimum sys requirements stated for 30 fps at 1080p, and I can't even get that with TWICE the lower resolution and everything at "low". I mean, you can go and try it in game, it's quick to see how absolutely godawful it looks on those settings, and it's giving me a meagre 5 frames?

1. Your specs are not that powerful.
2. Still, for turn based strategy game, it requires absurd pc configurations for everything to run smooth, and even then people have issues.

Game wasn't optimized on launch. It means it will never be.

On a Ryzen 5 5600 CPU a and Radeon 7600 GPU the game runs "fine" for me. But it's now noticeably slower than when I played back in the summer. I suspect the cause is something from one of the new expansions.

And it's a CPU-limited issue where the GPU matters little.

On my brand-new Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 laptop it plays at the same smoothness whether I have the discreet GPU (Nvidia 4070) on or off.

CPU usage is just super high in this game, even when I'm just sitting there on my turn not even moving the mouse. What's the CPU doing with all those clock cycles?

CPU is the bottle neck is my guess? I don't have much slow down in Aow4 and i have an old video card. However my cpu is I7 12700k and 64 gigs of ram.
