I cannot share that feeling, but then I have not experienced what you have experienced. The strength which comes with ice magic lies in slowing the enemy and disabling them with freeze, hoping that your element hits their weaknesses. Later on I like to make use of that strong spell which change the environment to artic. The boni you get, and the mali your enemies get when standing on your arctic domain feel quite strong to me.
I really think the frostling transformation is very underwhelming, and yea as meatshed mentioned is more the amount of ice magic not the power of what is available, I'm basically already maxed on the frostling fantasy with two tomes.
Anything else isn't in support of ice magic or forces me into necromancy, for example its very frustrating that if I want to buff my only ice tactical spell (ice coffin) I need to get the tier 5 shadow tome for the heart of chaos which is more a necromancy tome.
That tome actually gives a second very powerful ice spell (withering mist) though by the time i'd get it i'd most likely be forced into more necromancy tomes to reach 8 affinity (barring getting a hero that gives affinity as a governor or getting extra affinity by picking shadow signature skills with my ruler)
I like that we have the ice witch at least but the lack of any aoe tactical spells early on, or just more thematic things in general past a tier 1 and tier 3 tome is making me just want to play a bit of age of wonders 3 instead when it comes to frostlings.
A shame really since i was very excited about unlocking the cryomancer's staff, imma still finish my current game and take what i can and see if i find more sinergies for a ice domain
Only Nature has a coherent build, with all tomes for all tiers fitting the original theme. Though the elemental magic should be part of that as well.
Order already breaks the theme, since the whole zeal / fanaticism thing is actually chaos and destruction rather than harmonious order.
Just in general i feel the theme is falling flat right now and having to spec into necromancy to get the late game damage buff isn't helping.
I felt good about the other spell types cause they offer a lot more synergy imo and getting their respective 'heart' from the tier 5 tomes seemed to solve the problem
Edit: as in, you aren't going towards a totally different theme or synergy when trying to access your tier 5 upgrade
