There are five "Story Realms."
Although they unlock by completing them in numerical order, they're not a continuous story around one character. Unless you use the same character from the first mission to last. It wouldn't really make sense that way, especially if using the default first champion with his background, but you can.
Instead, it follows the events around different characters or Godir from different factions, with the protagonist of each mission being a character of your choosing even complete custom characters. All the missions tell an interwoven plot/narrative that comes together in the final 5th mission.
The Story is along the same lines as Planetfall's plot and plot twists. That's all I will say on that. :p
The story quality and the way it's presented is better than AoW3 and Planetfall imo, because the in session story board UI really adds a lot more meat to the campaign than say AoW3s or Planetfall's pre DLC simple popup windows short on text. The Story Realms also have proper intros and outros like AoW3, and unlike Planetfall's less than stellar briefings/debriefings. Even the voice actor does an A++ with voice acting. I love the way she perfectly pronounces a certain character's name in Mission 4. Rolls off her tongue like nothing! :p
The only problem was that it was too short. Although the last 3 missions could become a slog fest if you play your cards wrong. :D
