is there any way to kinda control the size of map you play on ?

i just did one with no free cities and 8 teams. the world was way too big. I played 50 turns and just had to quit.

It scales to player count. I'd recommend 4-6 players for a more 'average'-sized map.
Player count and player distance control the size of the map

Personally, I don't like this. I wish I could have a Huge map with just one A.I. and build a kingdom and play PvE. Sometimes I'm in the mood to just "solo"

Actually it is a tiny/small map. Too bad doesnt have map settings when making a new game. I wanted something bigger and not so many opponents, able to kick back and relax.

Install a mod which allows greater distance between players (there are at least 2 such mods)

Is there a mod to make the map smaller ? I had 5 cities, i went to turn 50. No ones borders were remotley close to each other.

Have you changed starting distance between players to the closest one?

First off, 8 players are way too many.

If each of the other 7 players has an average of 5 cities, that's 35 cities to siege.

Assuming you don't have 7 army groups to attack all of them at once, and you'd be spending at least 5 turns per city with sieging and vassalizing, that would take you 175 turns.

And that isn't taking factors like travel time into account. Pure flying / floating armies don't seem to exist in this game (which was the standard in AOW3) and you can't even take an outpost without a hero leading a multi-turn siege.

Another problem is that the city building has become way too complicated. Like the province improvements for matching adjacent tiles, this isn't Age of Wonders but more like Tetris.

Meaning that the game gets extremely tedious after a while, you spend too much time wrapping your head around foresters and quarries instead of having fun in the battles.

Letting the AI take over city management seems like a bad idea, just judging by how AI-built cities look like after integrating them.

Bigger maps break AI. So i don´t recommend this. I have seen 200 turn turn games where ai never invade each other and only aggressor is you.

I agree, not being able to choose map size is stupid. I started three games yesterday, using the official mod to allow "massive" distance between players with 7 players and all three times had an AI within 12 hexes of my starting city

Was it free city ? I think a free city is designed to be pretty much next to you in every start unless you remove them.
