What's your usual army composition?
I usually go for 3 frontliners (often 2 shield units and 1 polearm/charge/fighter unit), 2 ranged units (can be either 1 bow/crossbow and 1 battlemage or 2 of the same type), and 1 support. The hero unit, if present, will fill in one of these slots.

I found this combination works well for my first custom faction, but not so well with my other ones, so I'm still experimenting. Some appear to need more support, for example.

2 shields or spears, 2 range/battlemages/skirmishers, 1 support, and 1 extra
Hero usually takes a slot of range or melee

High factions naturally want more supports to keep their Awakenings going.

The basic comps dont vary much imo because you want both tankiness and damage and a mixed comp gives it to you. Your comps can get weirder with some of the more unique units available though. Houndmasters can just be spammed, for example; wildspeakers also, sortof. Or imagine doing something like 3x Wildspeaker 3x Nymph.

early game: 1 hero 2 shield 3 evokers.
Mid game: 1 hero 5 evokers + battle field summons.

I don't leave home without two or three hero-led armies, so I ride with a 1/3 support, 1/3 offense, and 1/3 defense.

Depends what I'm playing as, and at what point in the game I am.
Sometimes I don't even bother with shield units, since other beefy units can 'tank' just as well and I'd rather have a (heavy) charge unit insted. If you kill your enemy fast enough, you won't need to tank much xD

As High you can get away with using Awakeners in place of Sun priests or other supports for the Awaken buff, likewise every hero should get twin awaken to ease the burden. Otherwise, High focuses on overwhelming ranged damage. My High Stacks tend to be 1/2 Awakeners, 2 archer units, 1 shield, and/or 1 support/ hero.
