Thing with roads the comp does not always choose the best path to make them. Will usually choose a path near an already existing road creating more road that costs you gold to make. Also some things can not be roaded over like mountains and the computer will not always choose a path around the obstacle. You will sometimes have to micromanage the path of the road choosing smaller lengths instead of just clicking out the farthest you can move.
Course roads speed up travel, and the odd benefit even while making the road you get a larger distance you can travel.
