with some of those units covering the same roles (for example there are 6 types of "spear units") but with different abilities and attributes.
Of those 84 units, more than 40 can then be of any race, for example the halberdiers can be Human halberdiers or toad halberdiers etc... giving them 2 different passives depending on the race (there are ,i believe, more than 900 combinations of races+traits altho they range from very impactufl to not impactful at all and i am taking cosmetics into account here). The 44 remaining units are always the same in any game, for example a Nymph will always be a Nymph regardless of your race.
Then there are a number of units (here i dont have any numbers) that can be recruited from wonders, you will not be able to recruit them in all of your games, but they will be available in some.
The numbers given are an approximation from a fast manual count i have just made on the encyclopedia in game, but they should be reasonably close.
Every single feudal empire is the same.
Every single high empire is the same.
Every single dark empire is the same.
They use the same weapons, same tatic's, same spells.
Only difference is the skin they wear.
This is outright false, c'mon. Unless you just do NOT use any tomes.
The base units are the same, but you can change the gameopay a LOT with racial perks, faction perks and then tomes.
It is more diverse than you think, but might be affected by how you play.
Long story short: very diverse under normal circumstances - if you change the parameters and play as long as you can, at some point due to technology all reach a similar high point and the diversity becomes marginal despite it is still there.
E.g. Angel transformation gives the unit flying. So does Demon transformation. The difference? Angels cost less, Demos deal more damage. An archer with maxed out technology and active enchantments might be the same. And yet still differ if one is angel the other is demon.
And the sheer amount of units variety... mindblowing.
At the time I wrote that I still have not unlocked/summoned all possible.
Racials units are defined by their equipment, the faction race and the minor/major transformations you use on them.
The focus of AOW 4 is that you make your own racial units.
So for example you can pick tigrans with blue skins, the barbarian culture, and you apply the frostling minor transformation and wightborn major transformation. That will make your units look like game of thrones whitewalkers, except they'll be berserker cats with big axes...
I one of my games I made a goblin barbarian race with a focus on spawnkin transformation (reduced height, bonus damage), demonic transformation and the fire minor transformation. So that made them tiny little red devils with wings.
The only units you can't change are the magic summons (like elementals, animals etc.), and those are tied to tomes, so you either focus on them or not (each affinity has their own type of summons, so there is identity).
Not so. The units and unit enchantments they get from tomes alter each substantially, as do the racial traits. The Human Barbarians I had in my first two runs are a good example.
First Run: My skirmisher unit threw flaming javelins that set enemies on fire, increased their damage and morale when they made a killshot, and dealt more damage than most units while wounded.
Second Run:My skirmisher unit threw javelins.
the guys with the fist icon
same unit type with entirely different enchantments
you have that stuff all over throughout the game in addition to countless magical creatures
There threads long enough to fill books on this subject.
That poster argued you couldn't settle cities on release day, they often state factually wrong things.
Also said gatekeeping was a good thing as it keeps new people out of his hobby.
The siege of this thread is now underway and soon it too shall blow up to amazing proportions just as it has with the others.
Here is the facts. YOUR RACE is cosmetic.
Your Units come from 2 places.
(1) Your culture - These are your factions units.
(2) Magic Tomes - Everyone has the same access to these as you.
So no. Not when compared to previous titles.
While there is a LARGE amount of units, It's less than previous titles, ALOT less.
The largest complaint you will see here are the vast amount of people complaining that there is no racially unique approach. They are right. The white knights will argue however that your culture IS your race. Ignore them.
So to answer your question OP.
NO, do not get this game at this time. This can be fixed. But only time will tell if it happens or not.
Race is your FORM and racial TRAITS. There are MANY. You also choose a CULTURE which dictates your units, special buildings, unique hero abilities and perks. There's also your SOCIETY PERKS of which you choose 2. Then there's your HERO TYPE and maybe most importantly TOMES which determine many of your units, buildings, spells and the general direction in which your race will grow and evolve.
All of these are chosen by the player and MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN BUILDS.
But ya, you can put an orc in a wizards robe, therefore everyone should ignore all that. Right?
Your 'race' is defined by three clear category picks.
Form - consisting of physical appearance and two traits (body and mind)
Culture - 1 pick
Society - 2 picks
And is then further modified in game by transformation spells and events.
