resurrecting heroes

do i need the raise undead tome skill to resurrect heroes in my crypt? i have the wizards tower: crypt unlocked.

You need to have the body in your crypt, too. If another leader killed him and won the battle they get to keep the body in their crypt. Got to siege their capital to get it back. Not sure if there is a diplomacy option to trade for them.

the hero i want to resurrect is in my crypt. i could resurrect them in my last game but i cant in this game, and the only thing different is that i havent chosen the raise the undead skill in the tome. unless im missing/ forgetting something else.

Once you have the remains of a hero in your Crypt, you can simply click the Resurrect button to bring up a menu that tells you how much the process will cost. Resurrecting heroes isn’t free regardless of their level, however, you won’t have to pay any gold for it since the process only costs mana. It’s worth noting that even though you’ll see the remains of both friendly and enemy heroes in the Crypt, only the friendly ones can be resurrected.

souls is what i was forgetting. do i need to do anything other than choose the Necromancy tome to be able to resurrect undead? or does it instantly let me resurrect them once i get souls?

There are two completely different things here. If you build a crypt you unlock the option to resurrect your dead heroes using mana. If you go necromancy you can use souls to raise a hero as an undead (I don't remember if it's a specific tome or just any soul related tome). These are different systems with different buttons. Everyone can use the normal mana resurrection after they build the crypt.

i really wish there was a diplomacy option, sucks to have bodies at a city that's your ally that you have to invade

You can only resurrect your heroes, while you can reanimate anyone's heroes. You can, however, set a map option to always return heroes to their owner, regardless of who won the battle.
