To buy or not? What is an expansion pass? How does it compare to AOW3

So this is on "sale" on GOG. 71$ for the "Premium" edition.
This is what it says

"Purchase Age of Wonders 4: Premium Edition and gain access to Age of Wonders 4 and the Age of Wonders 4: Expansion Pass.

The Age of Wonders 4: Expansion Pass includes the Archmage Attire, the Dragon Dawn content pack (Release: June 20th 2023), the Empires & Ashes expansion (Release: November 7th 2023), the Primal Fury content pack (Release: February 27th 2024) and the Eldritch Realms expansion (Release: June 18th 2024). "


I despise marketing language, so i have never bought a season pass, expansion pass, or anything else that doesnt say "Select this option and get x result". Also really hate multiple editions, outside of a supporter or GOTY(back when that meant anything).

So is buying this option temporary or something? Do you have to re buy it?

I really enjoyed AOW3(and chivalrous intentions), still do, along with master of orion 2, HOMM3, endless legends, warlock master of the arcane, a bit of civ6.

I heard mixed things about this one. Such as the races arent very distinct, the map generation is bad, AI is trash(though honestly almost all AI ive seen past MOO2 is questionable at best..).

What do you think?

Im already inclined to get it since they released on GOG.

Based on the blurb, it gives exactly what it says: The base game + bonus archmage attire, and all 4 DLC expansions. Basically all the content that currently exists.

Right but is it temporary? Because to me, "pass" means "a pass to an event" "a pass to enter"

is it a subscription thing or something?

Ah, right. I wrestled with this a bit too when it was new.

No, it's not temporary. It's a DLC. It's just a really stupid name. What stuff like 'season pass' tends to mean is that you're paying in advance for a wave of DLC, instead of one DLC. So in this case, those of us who bought the 'pass' owned the DLCs before they even came out, and were granted them automatically as soon as they released.

In this case, the DLC are all out, so it's just a bundle of DLCs.

Map generation seems fine to me on ground level; I don't think it's particularly advantageous to start underground unless you're hiding. Whether I beat the brutal AI is kind of a toss up to me, people who exploiting build can probably beat it easy. I haven't tried to find the perfect build on YouTube.

And we live in a world where corpos push for "software as a service." Which is what steam is, so i always check GOG first.
So it wouldnt surprise me if there was an asterisk note at the bottom of something **

With the games you played and liked you would most likely like this. The season pass is worth it. If you unsure just get it all on sale.
