Butcher ogres - What am I missing?

Seems these guys pretty much guarantee a lost unit every time I engage them. Any tips on dealing with them, or do I just need to suck it up and replace my losses all the time?

You were unlucky I guess. The chance depends on missing HP, make sure to use units with full or almost full HP. If you can't, kite ogres with direct damage spells and long range abilities.

Insta-death RNG mechanics are kinda BS ngl. Also they seem to ignore unvulnerabilities which is double not fun.
At lest in case of butcher ogre maybe make it possible to return eaten unit after killing ogre or smth.

I'd work on unit synergies.
also use "thow away" units spiders/golems/magic elemental guys to suppliment main army and soak up intial action points.
