Are attack spells powerful?
I played for a bit, but I couldn't really get into the game. I felt that attack spells weren't powerful vs just attacking with units, but maybe I just didn't get to far enough into the game to see mid and later spells. I was just wondering are attack spells powerful? How does magic and attack spells compare to AOW 3? Are the spells more powerful in AOW 4?

The combat spells are never very powerful in AOW series. It's not Magic the Gathering where you can win just by direct damage spells. Combat spells are meant to be just damaging enough to tip the scale at the right moment to compliment your tactics with your units, not replacing them.

Geomancer and Chaos spells get quite impressive on higher tiers

You can get power combinations.
Tier 1 and 3 Shadow tomes have strategic spells that reduce status resistance, and Tier 5 Materium tome had a combat spell that hits all enemy units and had a 60% stun chance.
That can completely wreck your opponent.

But yeah, strategic and combat spells alone won't win you the game.

imo they are pretty trash next to buffing, debuffing, resurrection, battle summons etc.

Since one can only cast a SINGLE spell a turn it means that better have a big impact. Even if an attack spell has low costs it still isnt worth it next to something that has a far bigger impact.

Most damage spells to waaay to little damage to be worth your once a turn spell cast.

I dunno, I never pick them early game, I buy strategic and enchantment

They aren't powerful, and almost never can be used to destroy a stack of units entirely on their own. They're more for skewing the battle in your favor by softening up something before attacking.

With enough mana and casting points, though, you could unload several spells in one turn, and that potentially can kill or nearly-kill armies, but this would be something that would require a specialized build, and probably need to be around turn 100+.

AoW4 does not have Hellfire and Sacred Wrath like previous AoW versions, but:

"Tome of Oblivion" and its spell "Sleep of Oblivion" target unit dies without beeing able to resist don't wait 2 turns to let the unit come back use your ritual cannibal corpse eating ability, dark ritual or any other corpse removing spell or ability you can also just stand on it to prevent the resurrection effect. Its an autokill with no resistence checks and works on any unit, but heroes.

For T3 and below, crushing earth won't disappoint as wizard to take out 2 support units in 1 turn, some of the best support units are T3 units.

For AoE dmg take Lava Burst, it also provides good synergy with Vessels of Chaos.(+20% dmg for slow and burning)

Some spells like lava burst and tectonic shatter are incredibly powerful so much so that in combination with hero doom stacls they are hardly stopable. Which is one of the reasons that heroes are usually limited to 3 per pvp battle in multiplayer
