If you managed to get them back from the city where they were hold, check your recruitment pool for them.
So they are not shown anywhere? Prison, crypt?
I remember, that a few turns ago, they were all held in a non-existent "crypt" of my first conquered free city.
If you destroy the enemies throne and their realm shatters, and they never built a prison or crypt, your heros could be now in any one of the newly formed free cities.
Guess I really should build that crypt, but maaaan, I got so many other items on my construction list, that I want to build first.....
I dont think the AI used hero caps, because I once held 9 heroes from them.
That is not how the hero cap works.
