I've barely touched the story and only for some easy achievements. The regular maps they make for you are just fine, sometimes I add in a presence but otherwise just standard 7-players and hit play.

Long story short: your PC's power is the biggest influence on how long or slow it takes by the end of the day. From your description I recommend you start with maps with four players at max and then see if you increase it to five.
In general mods should not be a big deal, but it would help if you list the mods you are using to see if anything stands out there. And please share your map settings you have issues with. If you want to go the extra mile you can provide the developers with your savegame for them to use your data to improve the game's performance

'6 players' and customer pc issues LMAO
Anyway, OP's core complaint is valid that the game poorly supports the "play forever" playstyle, especially if there are technical reasons for it not working (beyond the obvious design reasons).
However, in the game as it exists right now, long campaigns are not supported by the game design itself. Custom games are definitely not competitive for as long as OP wants to play.
As i mentioned, i use mods - i have extra map modifiers, and extra map size, so that might be a part of the issue.. but i like long games, i don't want to finish at 70 turns :p but the game is getting unplayable somewhere past 130 turns, so i was wondering what other settings for the custom games people use.
Good that you mention TWW3, cause it's weird that turns work basically the same way but i don't have issues there :p
yeah, that's why i'm asking what settings people use.. it's weird, because i don't see why the game should become so slow lategame, especially when there are other games that don't have these issues, or at least not so soon
I have an i9 3.5ghz processor on an Asus Rock with 32 gb of CORSAIR RAM and an RTX 3080 Ti with 10 gb of Vram on it and a heat sync with 3 cooling fans in a vented case that keeps it consistently below 60c at almost all times.
I'm running into the same late game issue with research lag. A lot of people are. It's a problem with the game.
