Going over the hero limit
Is there any penalty for going over the hero limit? I had one of those cheap ones appear in the pool so I bought it before I vassalized my new city. I still have the hero and it shows me as over the limit. I can't figure out if there's a penalty, though. Is there?

if i am not mistaken you have to pay them some gold every turn .

Nevermind, I found it. The 30 gold fee people are talking about (which I didn't understand) only kicks on once you go over the hero limit. So if they aren't worth 30 gold, don't get an extra one.

Yes, there's a penalty like you found. For anyone curious if you hover over your per turn gold, it'll show you how it's rolled up.

While heroes seem not too bad, definitely never go over your city cap. That penalty is severe.

Heros will die if you run out dry and can't pay that 30gold. At least that's what teh tooltip says never tryied it myself, so not talking from expriance.

It depends. A good hero brings often so many boni to a city that they easily make it up for by just being there.

The risk is that its damaging your economy which could hinder your growth such as buildings or units. In the early to mid game this is going to be very important because if you make enough mistakes; unwise investments; or simply land some rough luck in the random map generation - you could end up with it all contributing to a noticeable lack of income which leaves you at a disadvantage to your opponents.

In the late game if you're already running a big empire and doing well you can more likely soak that whilst maintaining advantage.

Map size is also going to come into play; bigger maps and more resources means more chance that you can soak the penalty without hindering your advance.

It deducts gold per turn, increasing the more you are over the limit. In "Megacities" modified maps, it's a normal thing to have over your cap since you can't have more cities besides annex.
