How does unlocking tomes work?
Hey guys, a few question about how you unlock tomes. Lets say you want to unlock the tier 5 as quick as possible what would be the best action?

Here a few things that i (think to) know:
1) you unlock tomes of a higher tier when you have "finished" at least 2 of the tomes from the previous tier
2) to unlock/be availabe to choose the tier 4 tomes you also need at least 6 affinity with the corresponding magic, and for the tier 5 tome you need at least 8 affinity.

But this is where i have questions:
When exactly are you allowed/forced to pick a new tome? Because you dont have to finish every single object of the current tome to unlock the next one
And also: Does it matter what you research? Because if its only "you have to research 4 Spells to unlock the next tome" then does it mean, that if unlocking new tomes as quick as possible is your goal, that you should always unlock the cheapest spells? Does unlocking spells from the 1st tier when you are already studying a tier 3 tome also help you unlock the next tome or are you forced to unlock a certain amound of spells from the tome you are reading?
Or is the next tome unlocked not by the number of spells you have researched but by the research points you have invested since you got your next tome and once you have reached the hidden number the next tomes becomes unlocked after you finished your current spell?

As you see i have absolutly no clue how the system behind unlocking the next tome works
and dont know where to find the info, so i hope that one of you guys can help me out.

You pick the tomes, but the spells are random

Tier 1 is unlocked by default.
Tier 2 is unlocked by picking ANY two tier 1 tomes.
Tier 3 is unlocked by picking any two tier 2 tomes. *This unlocks tier 3 for all affinities.*
Tier 4 is unlocked by having 6 affinity and two of that affinities tier 3 tomes.
Tier 5 is unlocked by having 8 affinity and two of that affinities tier 4 tomes. *You can only have one tier 5 tome a game.*

You can go back and choose a previous tier, if you wish, by viewing all books.

Once you pick a tome, you'll be presented with options for spells to research. As said post 1, it'll tell you how many spells you have to research before your next tome is available.

Research speed is based on knowledge as a baseline and any bonuses from talents/buildings/spells/transformations.

This is wrong. You only need any two tomes of the lower tier and the total affinity, it doesn't matter how you get that affinity, only that you have the affinity. So, for instance, say I'm playing High, Chosen Uniters, Devotee's of Good, I have 4 Order affinity, now say I get an Order Signature skill on my Leader, I have five Order Affinity, now say I pick up a hero who gives +3 Order Affinity when Governor, I now have 8 Order affinity, If I go T1 Tome of Roots, T1 Tome of the Horde, T2, Tome of Winds, T2 Tome of Revelry, T3 Tome of Pandemonium, T3 Tome of Transmutation, both Chaos T4 Tomes, I can now take Tome of the God Emperor without having taken a single Order tome and a LOT of Chaos tomes.

You can indeed only have one T5 tome though and I have no idea why you'd purposely dodge taking the lower tomes given how the T5 is usually basically useless without the earlier tomes supporting it.

I'll have to test that. I thought it said you need the affinity tomes themselves.

FYI, if anyone didn't know already: When you select a new tome, you can actually go into the Tome library and choose any Tome, as long as you meet the Affinity requirements (Tier IV+). So if you have a thematic faction build in mind that requires 3 Tier 1 Tomes you can choose those 3, just to give an example. I haven't found out yet if choosing multiple Tomes of the same Tier disqualifies you from Tier 5 Tomes. I don't believe it does, though it likely only delays your research. Not sure if you can potentially research every Tome though.

It can actually speed it up if your research is low early. And it doesn't stop you from getting T5. You can potentially research every T4 and lower tome, but only ever one T5. You cannot be Arch Mage and God Emperor at the same time sadly enough.

Knew about Tier 5s, wasn't sure whether we can research ALL ZE TUUMS. Man, that's going to make Set Arcane Research and You Have Spells To Cast notifications a tavern maid to deal with :boggart::boggart::boggart::boggart::boggart::boggart::boggart::boggart::boggart::boggart::boggart::boggart:
