AoWIII is a solid all-around experience gameplay-wise. Combat is a bit more streamlined but has all the nuance of the previous games, plus some extras. Compared to AoWII the individual class/civilization customization is much more niche/specialized, but most of the classes are pretty fun to play as. Necromancer, in particular, is completely bonkers.
I can't speak much for the story in III because the characters are as dumb and flat as stagnant pond scum, but the campaign gameplay is alright. As with all AoW games though, what you are really there for is skirmish mode/multiplayer.
My recommendation for 4 is to wait and see how things shape up after all the expansions are released. It's not worth the pricetag right now.
I play Aow2SM and AoW4. Because they are both good and different Games.
If it is about the looks, go for 4. A great experience so far!
AoW4 allow you to have more build, but with limited magic creativity.
AoW3...thou I like it when it come out...there is not really a solid reason to get it now that AoW4 is now here....get it if your PC have problem with AoW4 and think AoW2 look old I guess.
Okay how is the game in any universe not worth 50$? Especially when they're charging 60-80$ for ♥♥♥♥ like redfall.
Good campaign.
Awesome magic.
Limited army use.
I woudnt recommand it as a newcomer.
Age of wonders 3: A good balance between magic and armies.
Neither surpassing the other.
Good campaigs.
Very different race's and classes.
But magic isnt as good.
Limited to casting 1 spell per turn and permant freezing water spells or raising mountains.
Age of wonders 2 allows you to do some really powerfull magic stuff that modern games just dont do.
Best map generator in the serries.
So many options.
Classes are really well done.
Age of wonders 4:
While i wish they made it more interesting you can make your own spieces.
You can unlocky almost all the spells in the game.
But so far the spells are just meh.
And the armies you can make dont stand out either.
But the game is still young so we will see in time.
The biggest reason to get 4 over the others two games are:
1: It is a modern game.
Meaning it is made for a modern audiance.
2: You can turn your people into angels, demons, undead, plantsims, etc.
So the one you shoud get is a simple question of:
Do i want something that is old but still good.
Or do i want something that is new and untested?
I would say get 4 for the simple reason that as fun as the old games are.
They are old.
So not ours.
