Another case where a user bought X without reading the packaging.
It is not buggy.
Bare... bones...? If you think about any game's potential, it is as barebones as it can be while offering a great experience already.

What packaging, what are you talking about?
You are better off waiting until the first dlc.
While not as bad as it was at the start the multiplayer is still full of desync's.
I got lucky and rarely crash but a friend of mine crashes every combat.
The content we have is of questional quality.
The interfact is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ aweful.
The map designed tools is extreemly limted.
I cannot even select the ai characters.
And while you can argue if the current costumize races system is better then pre-made races or not.
The sheer amount of bug's, compleet lack of a proper interface and control of your own game.
Makes me say:
Dont buy this game.
If you already have.
Wait a month or two atleast so they can fix the bugs.
And hopefuly(but very doubtfully) accauly make the map generator as good as it was in age of wonders 3 and give us the ability to pick our enemies.
I swear the more i play this game the more i want to know where the money the saved by going costumizing race's whent.
Because it clearly wasnt bug fixing or ai programming.
And i cannot stress this out enough.
There are many things you can argue about.
But we have daily forum post about being not being able to play multiplayer, The game crashing.
And to those of us like me who can play.
A very confusing interface and a bewildering lack of options to set up our map and ai options.
So to answer your question.
It isnt bare bones.
It is very buggy.
And a lot of the content is of a very questionalble quality.
Do not buy it unless you are really desperate to make Rat people play as wood Elves.
This is not a game developed by Paradox. On the other hand, Paradox games are all excellent products, and very extensive in complexity and content. The output content in the release is usually fair, and later it is completed more and more (something that only a few will really take advantage of, capable of getting the most out of this type of game). Many of those who complain about the initial content, as well as those who do know how to play it, are people who really have no idea how to play it.

Paradox Design Studios design games like EU, HOI, CK etc. No need to post a link because you obviously know their games.
The game has just been released and so is buggy as most games are on release. Some people report crashes as well although I haven't had one in all my play time so who knows what it will be like for you.
There are four DLC planned for this game and so you can see how 'bare bones' it is as it is currently 'missing' all these features.
I wouldn't describe myself as either neutral or a fanboy but I'm about as close as neutral as you're going to get at the moment. I have no agenda to promote. Of course, I LIKE the game and am enjoying it and that's usually all that's required to invalidate one's opinion on Steam nowadays. And since you've already bought the game, you can verify what you've been told by us all quite easily. ;)
They implemented safeguards like an actually really good resync system and the option to revert a game to the beginning of the round to work around the most severe bugs. They are really good, but their existence shows that Triumph were expecting major issues.
If you can hold off playing, I recommend doing so. It's a great game, but the minor and occasionally major annoyances caused by bugs could make you sick of it really fast.
Personally I only had 2 crashes in nearly 40 hours of play, and I did not really lose process with it. It's mainly some small things I noticed, like a lot of headgear and capes clipping on leaders. Usually ears poking through helmets and hoods.
It's playable enough for me at least and seems more balanced in combat than AOW3. I enjoy the combat a lot more, and the overall game.
AOW3 was good too, but I predict I'll end up playing AOW4 more.
I won't write a review until the first proper patch though, no game releases without bugs due to how complex they have gotten but Triumph has always been good with supporting their games so the first real patch is where that really gets to show.
