I've played all those, and still prefer AoW 4.
I prefer games with a fantasy setting over others which is why AoW has always been and will remain my favourite.
If you want to specify your definition to the release version of all of those games, without all the addons, then I like to agree, that Age of Wonders 4 might be superior. But it also benefits from being the latest in line of grand strategy games.
It's not for everyone, but I appreciate being able to play through a map in a few hours instead of a few days (or weeks). It's more of a tactical than a strategical (or grand) 4x game while some clearly prefer the latter to the former. I think they've carved out a pretty good spot in the genre with this one.
I own them all and not one of them is installed except Civ 6 collecting dust. AOW4 already has more hours in the first week then I put in all those games except Civ 5.
I love that all my units transform in the same ships on water. Way better than Planetfall, where you could see your units clearly. I mean, who wants that?
I love that I have limited save slots.
I love that the game runs slow during combat, even though I have way above the recommended requirements.
I love that the AI can siege me in one turn and can use my previous siege units against me.
I love the barebones campaign. That way, I can focus more on other things.
Overal. No bugs. Runs smooth. And has no glitches now, or in the future.
This game rules. This game is GOD.
Planetfall sea combat was god awful and ugly as sin. Total waste of developer resources.
