Anyone else finds the magic damage lacking?
Not hating on the game. love it in fact.
But i cant help but feel the game is lacking alot of OOMPH when it comes to the Destructivnes pf Damage spells, be they overworld or in combat.
Everything is focused around Buff/Debuff and CC. and thats nice and all for the taktic focused People . but sometimes one just really wants to Feel like a true Wizardking and unleash a powerful spell that can wipe out some higher units instead of just damaging !/3 of there HP
There also seem to be not many combat damaga magic Spells or overworld ones in general compared to the massive amounts stat changers. But hopefully that will change with some of the DLC.

Or maybe someone can mod the balance a bit to make Destructive magic more appealing.

Yeah I know what you mean. I do like the one that crushes with a big rock, and if they are TIII or lower there's a 60% chance of death. That one makes me feel like a mighty wizard, but most of the others are just like having an extra unit that attacks but auto-hits. To be fair, that's still good, but it's not the Great Hail of old.

I also miss the old Cosmic Spray, Magic Fist, and others from AoW3 with fun animations (even if the damage wasn't great).

There is a rock spell that instakills units and world map spells that wipe out entire provinces and turn the land desolate. There is plenty of powerful magic in this game, you just need to look harder

I think developers are concerned with the implications of being able to click a unit off the battlefield without worrying about positioning or abilities. It's antithetical to the idea of tactics. Even going back to the originator of the Wizard King 4X, Master of Magic, magic was better at clearing chaff and mid-level units than end game units.

That said, there are strong damage spells. They just seem to all be Sustained. Smaller damage over a period of several turns. Shadow has a spell that creates a growing damage field. If you can keep the enemy pinned down inside it--or better, force them to move through it--it eats them alive. There's also Withering Mist, which deals 15 damage to the enemy army for three turns every turn, plus weakens and blinds them.

I agree that on average magical spells feel like they are lacking. I can understand why the are limited, but casting chain lightning and not even seeing a visual difference in health bars after the cast is super underwhelming.

On the other hand spells like Lava Burst seem stupidly hard to counter. Even without the ability to overcast via a wizard king, dropping a lava burst every round on half the enemy's army for 20% of their health breaks the AI's ability to think. They just turtle and try to heal and buff through it, but with enough casting points you can just lava burst every turn and melt them away.

Most of good nuking spells are in Materium, so you'll have to go there if you want to focus on nukes rather than summons, buffs and debuffs.

Also look up Tome of Amplification and its hero skill and Tome of Astral Mirror/Astral Reflections.

I guess if you played AoW3 and earlier, you're might be expecting to have wizardly might fall into your lap, but in this game you need to work for it. Godir aren't necessarily wizard kings this time around, so it kind of makes sense.

not a single answer in days and suddenly 8 within an hour xD

That being said. even if you "work for it" it still feels underwhelming compared to spells of older games.
I tried my hands at modding but i just cant seem to get the hang of it (yet) .
So i will probably wait a bit more to see what is to come.

Yes.
Modern games(Not just this game)
Have a burning haterd for spellcasters.
It is the only reason i can think of why the rule:
The newer the game the weaker the magic.
Is a thing.

It is a sad thing when:
Wizards king are suppose to be godlike spellcasters.
But cannot even one shot a tier 1 unit.

I mean, materium has a spell that deals 30 damage to every enemy in combat with 60% stun to boot. 50 if you have heart of materium built. You can increase it by 20% per Amplification Pylon or per hero with Spell Amplification on the field, and you can clone said heroes with Astral Reflections. You can also cast it twice per turn with Overchannel. Tbh this kind of blows AoW3 Hellfire spam out of the water.

Nope. If anything it's the opposite. Many of the battlemages have some long range AoE attack or similar special tool for damage/control and it feels like they've basically stolen the job of Archers.

while i can agree that there are not many straight up high damage spells spells like astral refraction are straight up broken especially with overchannel moment you get that skill you can steamroll the map with heroes just have sufficient mana and you will murder everything around you

Same as any other affinity, grab tomes? You're most interested in Terramancy, Crucible and Creator if you want to do the big damage. crucible will need 6 materium affinity to unlock and Creator will need 8. Don't forget Amplification from Astral for the damage boost (at least).
