Can't Explore Ancient Wonders?

Speaks for itself, I'm playing a variety of Dwarf games, and something I was REALLY excited for was exploring Ancient Wonders, however, I just can't seem to figure out how. I've placed my hero on the ancient wonder, yet it only gives me the description of the wonder and a little menu, with no available way of exploring it. Am I missing something?

It's quite possible the wonder has already been explored. If you select a wonder and there's not a red Occupied statement in the pop up there's nothing to explore. The AI can do some of the easier ones and there are certain traits which auto clears the closest for a ruler.

I don't see a red occupied statement but I'm also unable to annex it?

Having the same problem, and no way it's been explored already, it's turn 3. However, there is not a red Occupied statement, so maybe that's the gist.

When you created your Race/Faction before starting the match did you choose to start with the "Wonder architects" perk that places a wonder near your first city at the start of the match? If so that Wonder starts as a cleared/already explored wonder, meaning you can't explore/fight any occupants inside it.

if another player/ai did it you wont be able to
and they are sneaky the ai i didnt notice a underground passage near one area

I've noticed if you have Wonder builders or whatever the racial perk is called, and you claim a wonder without exploring it, you cant explore it anymore even though it says you need to explore it. You'll still get the bonuses from it as it was cleared but you wont get any items or exp.
