Water magic?
I have watched a lot of prerelease content like streamers playing and the dev streams, and just noticed i havent really seen any water based spells. I mean there are water elementals and I assume you get them from a water based tome but i havent seen it yet.
I love water based stuff and hope it is in the game, I know there is cryomancy and frost type spells but i count them as a separate thing.

That's not specifically water

As far as i know there isn't a tome for water, unless its named something weird (for example the tome that includes a lot of lightning stuff and allows you to summon storm spirits is called the "Tome of Evocation").

The only true wate magic in the game right now are Water Elementals/themed units like you say, and the tears flowing into our keyboards from the lack of water spells and tomes. :D
Astasia Apr 30, 2023 @ 3:26pm
I would guess, if it is coming in a DLC, it would be part of the Primal Fury DLC, which is said to include new nature themed tomes. I mean they have frog people already, I don't see them adding a clearly aquatic race and not having any water magic.

Maybe but the upcoming and presumably only DLCs deal with dragons, industry/steampunk, nature and fey, and eldtrich/Lovecraftian things. I don't really see how you would fit water into any of those except maybe in the Eldritch Realms DLC, which if it is actually Lovecraftian themed could relate to water and the deep sea though it's still a bit of a stretch.

From the press release descriptions of the expansion / dlc content :

Dragon Dawn: Embrace the power of the Ancient Dragon Lords in the Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn Content Pack. From your Dragon Throne, forge empires inhabited by reptilian minions and use draconic magic to evolve your people into dragon hybrids. This content pack includes a new Dragon Ruler type, a Reptilian Form, and New Tomes of Magic, and will launch in Q3 2023.

Empires and Ashes: The empires of mortals resurge after the devastation brought forth by the Wizard Kings! In the Age of Wonders 4: Empires and Ashes Expansion, players fuse magic and steel to unleash devastating war machines to drive the Godir back into the Astral Sea. This full expansion, slated for launch in Q4 2023, includes a new Culture, new Tomes of Magic, new Empire Building options and a new Story Realm.

Primal Fury: Channel Nature’s Spirits in the Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury Content Pack. Create races using new beastly forms and a primeval culture, with new Tomes of Magic that tap nature’s hidden powers and the Fey realms. Your surroundings will be able to contain new forms of wildlife, creatures and bountiful resources. Primal Fury will become available in Q1 2024.

Eldritch Realms: The Age of Wonders 4: Eldritch Realms Expansion opens portals to realms filled with arcane marvels and unspeakable horrors. New forces threaten the rule of the Godir of Magehaven. With new strange monsters, new racial forms, magical realms and locations, this full expansion will bring a new dimension to the game in Q2 2024.

Unfortunately there doesn't really sound like there is much saying 'water' magic based in that, maybe Primal Fury?

it could be a really higher tier tomes. you have to look at some of the streams when they show them off.
i for once like wind magic. but there was no tier 1 wind tome. but then i noticed in a stream that a higher tier tome was wind magic (i think tier two) existed, which ironicly was a materium tome which is the same affinity than the earth tome.

As Astasia said, water could fit quite nicely with the nature themed pack. Let's hope. Maybe they'll do seasonal courts for their fey this time around and the spring theme can include a water tome for us?

Isn't the lore based intro stating that "Nimue" returned to realm, and now i read there is no water magic?
What kind of heresy is this?! XD

Agree.
Water magic is the most beloved school in all parts of the series. In AoW 1 played Lizards + Water Magic. In Aow 2 - Draconians / Shadow Demons + Water Magic. It is unfortunate that in the fourth part it is not. Looking forward to future DLC`s.

Apologies in advance but a thought just came to mind, what if water magic comes in the Dragon Dawn DLC? They are reintroduce Lizardmen with their reptilian form, AoW lizardmen are highly associated with water and water magic. Not only that, but the reptilian form designs seem to go as far as making crocodile or alligatormen, judging by the screenshot they released. It would be strange to have toads, lizardmen which are highly associated with water and maybe even alligator and crocodiles without spells that focus on water or at least let you terraform swampland.

I don't know if it is lizardmen specifically, I get the impression they are more 'dragonkin' which are a different take on a reptilian race. I'm not ruling it out, SBA, but I think its unlikely. Water tiles and combat was very underbaked but I don't see much benefit to fleshing that out as most map feature little of it. Guess we'll see nearer the time when they start teasing more of the content.
