You can do both. I recommend to take your time and play the inititation/story realm with tutorial messages enabled. That suffices for the basic. But since it is dangerous to go alone, take this

Keep in mind: you win as long as you are having fun playing!

Learn as you go unless you're very much into min-maxing and just want to use the "best" strategies immediately without actually learning anything.

In my experience, if you try to read guides from the beginning you'll be swamped with unfamiliar info and just get more confused. I'd recommend the game tutorial scenario, then go back and read stuff / search for further info.
