Is it possible to hotseat in an online game?

Title. I want to play hotseat with someone who is nearby but also play with a friend who is far away. Hotseat is possible, but it doesn't seem like it's possible to have one player control 2 slots in an online game. Am I just missing something or is this just not a feature?

It is not a feature. That would be a little too much to ask, considering the different nature of the game modes. I recommend you play hotseat and use Steam Remote play. That way all three of you can enjoy a hotseat game in the most stable version of multiplayer the game has to offer at the moment.

I guess that's better than nothing, but I would still have assumed it would't be that difficult to have one player control multiple factions, but I didn't code the thing.

In theory it is not, if it was planned like that from the beginning. The biggest opponent here, like with many other games, is the weird DRM which is used to make it... well, weird.

That and the outlook for cross play multiplayer which would not be possible if the versions between platforms are too different because e.g. PC version is capable of more than console X version.

If you wish to not remote it PBEM seems to have almost no issue (outside of some occasional hiccups) till the devs decide to fix this multiplayer mess.

How would that address threadstarter's wish to have hotseat in the same game, so they can play as a party of three?

If I recall correctly all 3 of them can PBEM, as you can't remote play+online play currently.

Just tested it, nope you'd have to own the game 3 times, so only way is remote play for 3.

How unfortunate. Otherwise it would have been a good idea to go that approach.

Currently remote play isn't working out because both parties have pretty bad internet, but we'll try again when that condition improves tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions.
