can somebody explain economy and research ranking pls?

this hardly ever bothers me, but last night I had a game that made those rankings scream "this doesnt make any sense at all".

when the game finished, I saw the economy graph and discovered I was 2nd through most of the game. the guy in 1st place was the dwarf that I locked underground, he had a single city the entire game. and he was 1st by a lot, until the last few turns. how is that? what really factors into the economy score? it clearly is not just income.

research also didn't make sense. I was second through the entire game, but when looking at affinities of leaders I was always ahead. I finished with 53 affinity points, the guy 1st place was 45. clearly I researched more, since I unlocked more tomes. and still second... what's in this score if not just research?

These statistics are completely and utterly useless and worthless.

The stats make no sense. They give you no idea of how far ahead or behind you are in any given thing. I don’t care if I’m number one in any given thing if I cant contextualize it by seeing by how much I’m ahead everyone else.

For magic, maybe mana? Seriously who knows

I believe it is total gold and total mana. You can test it by spending all your gold, you will become last in economy ranking.
