You can have up to 8 players in a game. The multiplayer will function the same way as the random map mode (The usual way to play)
You can definitely form alliances with the other players during the course of the game via diplomacy. Your allies will join you in battle if they have a stack in range at the combat's start during which they will get their own turns to move their units.
However, while you will be able to work together with your ally to wipe out all the other races, there can only be one winner. But conquest is not the only way to win. So if you want, you can work together to wipe out all the other factions with military means before having a peaceful science race with each other to decide who wins the game.
I reccomend taking a look at the previous games to gather the information you're looking for.
Not sure if so the called "story-realms" are playable in multiplayer but I would not hold my breath or anticipate the game for a focus on Coop-campaign.
There is some form of overlying level system and from experience of the prior entries the game can be played perfectly in Coop and PVP so if that is good enough for you, it may be what you are looking for.
I think they want to give info about those story realms as the dev diaries progress though, so we will have to see.
"Allied Victory" is a game setting that allows players on the same team or alliance to win together once all other players(ai or human) are defeated/a victory condition is achieved.
Conversely, if you want to do a coop survival game against a super hostile world without enemy 'players', you'll need to disable allied victory if you want to be allied with your coop partner(s). This isn't an official game mode(I wish it was), but scaling in Planetfall did make it an interesting option if you set marauders, dwellings, and invasions to maximum hostility at a slower game speed. The new Marauder system looks interesting in AoW4, but we'll have to see how well it scales.
As long as there are allied units(even a single scout) adjacent to battles(the hexes surrounding the _attacked_ hex), all allied players will participate in battle. The only exception is explorable dungeons that can only be directly engaged with a single party/stack. (These appear to be the "Wonders" in AoW4 - no idea how event battles work.)
In coop play, it's generally a good idea to station a scout at your ally's important cities so you can atleast help them with your spells during important battles.
If it were similar to Old World to allow simultaneous play then I would’ve definitely purchased this game. I’d rather not watch YouTube while waiting for my teammates to make a move.
