There are currently 12 games out in Japan, 9 in the West. Reverie will be the 10th game to come out in English. Kuro 1 and 2 are the 11th and 12th games, and are currently not (yet) localized. Officially anyway, since there are fan-made patches for them in varying states of completeness and quality.
Kondo has said that the overall story is 60% done after Reverie, so, including Kuro 1 & 2, there should be about 7 games left (5 in Japan). Knowing Falcom's history with needing more games than initially planned for previous Trails' arcs, it's more likely that there will actually be 8-10 more game (6-8 in Japan).
Even so, there is an intended end to the series, and Kondo has also said that at least the general plot of the main story is already written (and has been from the start), so they're not just going on and on without a plan to where it all leads.
About 6 Months after the Ending of CS 4 (one Scene from the Ending in CS4 is the prologue from Reverie)
And around 1,5 Years before Kuro I
why would you want them to end? As long as they can keep up with the quality they can publish as many games as they want!
That said, beside the Kuro arc set in Calvard (2 games released in japan, a third one to come) I imagine they'll make at least another couple arcs, and I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up needing more time.
After all they didn't initially plan to have sky fc and sc be separate games. or to release sky 3rd or the crossbell games at all.
and I think even the cold steel arc was initially expected to only be 2 or 3 games.
I havent played Kuro, nor i read anything about the mainplot - so pure speculation from here on.
But i guess the "overall" Story has something to do with the Grandmasters plan and the seven sept terrions. Until now only 4 are known: Liberl, Crossbell, 2x Erebonia.
So that leaves 3 unknown.
I'm also sure that the fact about the depletion of the septium veins in eastern zemeruia is relevant in the future, so we will at least get 2 or 3 Arcs. Maybe one big like erebonia and 1 or 2 "little" Arcs in Ored/Leman or (especially) Ateria and the septian church.
Despite the fact that we had so many games, a lot of zemuria is still in the dark.

And i'm curious about the "outside". Thats another layer of Story which is completly unkown until now
So in Japanese timeline there should be enogh story for another 10-15 Years of Videogames.
In western timeline... well... Since we got Reverie 3 yrs later, and Kuro I isn't even announced...
to be fair they're catching up pretty quick. I expect by the time kuro 3 comes out we'll probably be at kuro 2 in the west, so given another year or two we'll probably be only one game behind as a rule
I'm not that optimistic. I mean "catching up" since we got the Azure/Zero release, was only because they mostly based on the already done work from Geofront subs.
AND we didn't get english dubs for them. Thats a time consuming part as well.
I mean, it would be cool and i would not complain, if we would get the games maybe 6 months after their release in japan.
So yes, with the impossible task of being so far behind 12 years ago and falling EVEN FURTHER behind before even starting to catch up, we have made considerable progress. We'll catch up sometime within the next few years, I have little doubt.
Wasn't Crossbell originally not supposed to be it's own arc, and Cold Steel was supposed to be done in two?
Something like that. As I understand it, the original plan was to go directly form Sky SC to Cold Steel. However, they realized they had to do Crossbell to tell the Cold Steel story properly, and had to do Sky 3rd as a setup for Crossbell, as well as a more general infodump and worldbuilding opportunity.
For Cold Steel, I'm not sure if the plan was 2 or 3 games, but definitely not 4. Also, Alisa was originally supposed to be the main character, with Rean in the role of Crow. That's why some promotional art features Alisa more prominently than Rean, and also why there is such ho-yay chemistry between Rean and Crow.
So what was supposed to be 4 or 5 games became 9 (10 if you count Reverie, which probably wasn't planned either). This being the case, I would not be surprised in the slightest if Kuro and the subsequent arcs take more games than Falcom is currently estimating, or even if there will be more arcs than the 3 (including Kuro) they claim to be enough.
In fact, I think Kondo has said recently that they're not sure if they can finish Kuro's story in 3 games ...
Note: I do not care about this in the slightest. As long as the games are enjoyable, I'm happy to play them for however long it takes to finish the story. :-)
