Mitsuo Singa
So I like alot of Falcom's OSTs but I've come across some comments on YouTube videos where they basically trash on the guy if the track was made by him. Is it a meme to hate on him or do people really not like his music?

Singa, the man who can replicate animal sounds with instruments.
Totally a godlike compositor.

So far, I've learned from youtube comments and here that there is no love or hate him kind of deal. It is either hate or indifference towards the man. This has got to be the only other composer besides the dude that made dragon quest music that I feel has gotten a lot of ♥♥♥♥ from the fans. That is insane to me because its practically unheard of.

nah man love alot of his work (NOT ALL, JUST LIKE I DONT LIKE ALL OF THE OTHER COMPOSERS WORKS EITHER)... but to be fair i listened to the games songs in game for all of them before i looked into the fandoms views on them so i wasnt tainted by the hive mind that is the english falcom community. it helps a bunch as they dont seem to know what they want over there, so your better off forming your own opinions on this series ( really should be doing that for everything but thats asking alot from what online communities have become in this day and age )

alot of the people's hate is they have attached themselves to the original composers and they arnt getting as much work lately so they have to over critique SINGA and any other composer to compensate... happens alot in fandoms/ different forms of media, you get used to ignoring the plethora of useless opinions as they are always easy to spot so atleast there is that.

if your lucky sometimes actual musicians will coherently explain why they think its bad ( rarely happens though ) but honestly what alot of musicians dont seem to realise is that if you prefer the others sounds especially in the context of games (cutscenes/exploring areas/battle themes) your musical training means nothing in the end.

Yeah, me too. It's quite melancholic, especially when the saxophone (I think it's a sax) joins in.

Currently playing Kuro no Kiseki with the fanpatch and i read a lot of comments how terrible the music in Kuro is and i just dont see it.
I already encountered like 4-5 earworms in the OST and so far the quality of the OST was very high.
I think the hate Mitsuo Singa and his team get is REALLY overblown and not really based in reality.

As someone who usually ignores online communities in general (I've only been active here the past few days out of sheer boredom) this is my first I'm hearing about all this.

BUT!

Seeing the mention of how they worked on the Evolution Soundtracks explains EVERYTHING. A few years ago I got curious and went to listen, and... why? Every single track I listened to was just... worse? I don't know how many of them were Singa or not, but yeah.

The evolution soundtrack is worse across the board for sure IMO. If Singa did that and nothing else, the vitriol he gets would be understandable.

Alas his newer work is much better on average, though like I said earlier, there are some quirky parts where it sounds like he's trying too hard to make a unique melody more than a good one for portions of some tracks (not the whole track, just portions).

Like you, I think constructive criticism is valuable, and I think someone needs their head examined if they think all his new work is no better than the evolution soundtrack. So when someone does blanket 'ITS ALL TRASH RHEEE', even though the chances of him reading said comments AND taking them to heart are near-zero, if by some fluke he does, they wont be helping him improve at all.

I also really like the Cold Steel 3 and 4 use of some of the earlier classics like Atrocious Raid and The Decisive Collision. :) And can't forget Mystic Core. ^^

I have listened to many Falcom OSTs, albeit all of them in a vaccum, so my take on all this may be out of touch with what those who have played these games would believe. Mitsuo Singa is nowhere as bad as the haters say he is, but he has tons of problems that likely stem from him composing songs so excruciatingly quickly. Many of his VST choices can sound grating, particularly electric guitar and violin VSTs. His mixes often sound muddy and blown out, with many of his songs either having too much low mids or too much high mids. Additionally, his songs can lack cohesion, with tone rapidly shifting from one feeling to another without warning. However, that being said, he CAN compose songs to compete with Sonoda's compositions at the very least. Iclucian Dance from Ys VIII is one of the most memorable songs of that entire soundtrack, and plenty of his Trails of Cold Steel III and Ys X compositions are quite good. His Super Ultimate arrange of Diabolic Howl from Kuro no Kiseki is absolutely INSANE. The upcoming Kai no Kiseki has two Singa pieces (both boss themes) in particular that I am quite fond of, but his lack of consistency and his emphasis on quantity over quality have reigned the recent Falcom soundtracks in quite a bit in the memorability department. Falcom doesn't have as much money to throw around as a Square or Konami does, so they cheap out by utilizing Singa for pennies on the dollar.

tl;dr Singa is a decent composer. The issue is that he's surrounded by composers that are WAY better than he is.
